Series 3 overheats

Hi All, My 1982 SWB petrol fitted with Kenlow fan overheats. This is when the vehicle has run a few miles and warmed up ok and driving ok, but then I stop and leave for few minutes and when I return it is difficult to start and will not tick over. At this point the gauge is showing hot and the fan comes on. The only way to go is with the choke half out, blowing black smoke and 'kangarooing down the road hoping not to have to stop in traffic for a few miles until it returns itself to normal. any ideas?
