Hi all,

Since owning my series 2A, there has always been occasions when 2nd gear can be awkward to engage, or when you press the clutch you get a clicking noise as if the gear is not fully engaged.

This has not got any worse of recent, but whilst reading this months LRO, there is a workshop article regarding this, suggesting "the need to replace the locking tab and retighten the nut on the end of the gearshaft - visible from the small top cover on the transfer box."

My questions are...........

Has anyone carried out this job before?
Can you carry our the work with the gearbox in place?
Is this a simple job for someone with a little mechanical knowledge?

Thanks in advance. Neil

hundreds of times ,yes you can remove centre seat panel remove small plate passenger side on top of transfer box ,undo tab washer before tighthening with hammer and suitable punch,as your not likely to have tool to go in from pto cover, but shouldnt help gear change if not synchro on 1st, 2nd,as 2nd gear has sliding dog to engage

Hi Jamesmartin,

Thanks for the info, the gear change is not so much of an issue, it is mainly the clicking and the gearstick movement when pressing the clutch pedal - from what i have read tightening this nut should sort it out.

Cheers. Neil.

Learn to double declutch and on change downs to second as the gear stick comes to the neutral position blip the accelarator, our forfathers had to do all changes this way but on the series one and two we only need it for second gear, only go down to first at slow speed.
