it used to take ages for the needle to rise to the top after filling up , now it only gets to half way even though i know the tank is full .
is this something i could fix myself , if so how ?

oh and i am embarrassed to let on that its a 2.0 mpi if it makes any difference to the repair ....

The fuel sender in the tank has a small wire that breaks and gives false readings.

Open boot, remove carpets etc there's a ring with 6 screws above the fuel tank, sender held in with large 5-6" diameter threaded collar, tap this round or use a strap wrench to open it. Be careful when undoing the fuel lines .. they're often rusty and manky, snap one and you're in bother! Mark them so you know which goes back where. The sender lifts out, re-solder the wire. Re-assembly is the reverse ... ;)

As it will be the fuel pump that you will be removing you have to remove fuel lines so first depressurise the fuel system and remove the electrical wiring plug, when the pump is removed you will see the float of the sender unit attached. If the sender proves to be faulty the whole assembly will require replacing.

Just for anyone not paying attention and not reading all the detail, like me the first time I read the thread, this only applies to petrol engine discos..TDIs don't have a pump in the tank.
