I have a '92 90 CSW with an auto-box from a Disco 1, great combo! Semi-auto as in Citroen/Smart et all is to steered well clear of. ECU for clutch and another for gear selection, both liable to fail, with huge pause for every gear-change.
auto box from a d1 is a full auto box, mechanically controlled as they all were till ecus took over

What engine do you have? I have been considering on and off converting to auto with my tdi
you can get 2 or 300 tdi autos the former been quite rare,it must be a tdi box and not v8 unless you change t/c and valve block, without edc boxes can be a bit sluggish but if thats not a concern its a good conversion

Original 200tdi engine. Did have an auto-box from a V8 Disco but now has one from 200tdi Disco. Had to move the engine back a couple of inches but no big deal. Be sure to use the disco transfer box also - gives better gearing.

I must admit I quite like an auto off road. My 4.0 litre Jeep convinced me how good they are.

That said, the Tdi can feel a little underwhelming with an auto. They still go ok flat out. But remeber you only have 4 gears compared to 5 and that the torque converter saps some power.

With a Tdi you will also be very old school with the automatic. So no lock up converter when off road. This will mean you’ll use the brakes a lot to control steep descents. And due to the nature of torque converters it won’t crawl along at idle as well, as when you hit a bump it’ll stop unless you give it a bit more throttle.

Expect an mpg drop too.
