Hello all, I know there's already some threads about this but I'm looking for some more up to date info. I'm planning on listing my defender on eBay and would like to know best way/pitfalls to avoid when doing this. Would appreciate any tips. Thanks.
Edit thinking of putting it on as 'buy it now' with a 'make offer' option as I know the lowest price I'd accept.

A problem with selling vehicles on Ebay is that you get so many dreamers who will bid and "buy" your vehicle but never pay or follow through with the sale.

Then you have those who buy and then decide they want to haggle afterwards because you didn't tell them that there were scorch marks inside the ash tray or that inside the exhaust is black and not silver

It is a very common problem with selling high value stuff on Ebay. You can vet the bidders but it is a bit of a hassle. If I were you I would try some other free options first (like FaceBook Marketplace) before going down the Ebay route. It can be an extremely frustrating experience and although you do in theory have a much larger market to sell to you also have a bigger pool of idiots.

Good luck!

You can potentially get more but you might have to go through a lot of hassle too. You can always use it as a last option if you don't get what you want. With Ebay if you don't set a reserve (which you have to pay extra for) you could be unlucky and it could sell for a lot less than you wanted (which is what happened to the bloke I bought mine from). If you do set a reserve you get the people testing your reserve bidding and retracting bids etc just to see what your minimum is. Selling a vehicle is one of my least favourite things and really brings out the serial killer in me

I nearly always give my cars to family members or run them into the ground and then scrap them. Mind you, they have usually been run into the ground before I get my hands on them.

Me too. I usually run them until they are ready for the scrapyard.
Personally, I favour places like LRO magazine if I do want to sell one, because they are read by enthusiasts and Land Rover people.

That's useful, thanks it's the nitty gritty I need to know. I have seen people ask for a deposit by PayPal then the rest in cash presumably to avoid fees. Also not accepting bids from users with less than 20 feedback or people who haven't viewed.I was thinking of a buy it now price and also a 'make offer' option.

How much did you pay to advertise in LRO?

I use classified adds & I weeds out most of the timewasting bidders.
Fixed price advert that shows your phone number.

How to sell with eBay Classified Ads
Here's how to create an eBay Classified Ad:

  1. Go to the advanced listing tool - opens in new window or tab or select Sell at the top of any eBay page.
  2. Enter your item's details.
  3. In Format, select Classified Ad.
  4. Duration will be set to 28 days automatically.
  5. Select List item.

I’ve used the classified ad way of selling on eBay. No problems,a £15 fee and bank transfer or cash when your buyer turns up. No real difference to an auto trader type ad just cheaper.

Ok thanks.

I've just taken a load of photos and will put on later. I'll expect a third of a curly wurly 'cos it's not galvanised.......':D:D

I think you are doing yourself out of value with that price.

Mars bars and Curly wurlys have got smaller (as we have got older) so thier original value/ versus size isn’t what it used to be.

You should push for a whole 1 at least as a starting price:D

Good luck with the sale:) although we all know TM won’t let you get short changed:)

Another vote for classified ad on ebay, I've sold several (cheap) cars on ebay and 75% have been a PITA. People bidding from miles away then no contact etc
