1995 P38 2.5 DT (manual).

My gearbox selector box is trashed. Managed to find a suitable replacement at a reasonable price but what is worrying me is what has caused the failure?

It couldn't be something in the gearbox sticking causing too much force inside the selector box leading to failure, could it? Or am I just having an attack of Rangeynoia?

PS Hopefully I'll find out how easy it moves once the replacement arrives.

not a lot ,theres a long pin that goes from shaft into gearbox selector yoke they break often ,you need to undo crossmember and lower box down some on a jack to change housing
 
Thanks James. Pin seems OK.

Yes, crossmember off, prop guard. Exhuast middle off. Think you can get away without removing the prop-shafts but I prefer to take them off.

Bit of a mystery. There's not exactly a lot to go wrong in there, is there? gearbox appears fine.

The selector box is knackered. Damned if I can see why! Pictures attached. It will not go over into fifth or reverse. Moves fine forwards and backwards but will not move over. If I use a screwdriver the ball-bearings in the detents (I assume that's what they're called?) move fine. Doesn't seem to be any restriction there. Tried to unscrew one to test but it is solid. When I've more time I'll try and get an impact-driver on it.

Surely it has to be a detent or maybe the socket on the bottom of the stick?

I did take the selector pin off and I could persuade myself it isn't 100% straight but it isn't far off. Would that be enough to stop it though?

Actually, what am I talking about? It cannot be the selector pin because I cannot move the thing over holding it on the bench!

So, gotta be detents or the ball and socket on the bottom.
