Just thought I'd share how I overcame a problem on my 95 4.6hse, it may help someone in future.

Driving along one day when it threw up a select neutral message, said slow down if moving, but putting it into neutral did nothing. Gearbox lights flashing.

I tried putting it into low range and back to high, it went into low range but got itself stuck there.

Instead of changing into low/high via rods or cables, the RR has a motor on the outside of the transfer box that spins a spigot to change ratio. There is a position sensor built into the assembly of this motor.

Having checked the trans box ecu(access from back of front LH seat) and contacts under the transfer box the only thing left to viably suspect was that the position sensor was at fault.

I could have sourced another one from ebay for around £40 but I like to fix things and save money.

I took the motor off (4x 8mm bolts) and found I had 3x t20 torx screw to take out to get at the position sensor.

Once out of the motor assembly the next trick is to take the lid off. There is a plastic rim keeping the lid on. I drilled a small hole through the rim and used a small flathead screwdriver to prise the lid off and away.

I found that the white disc (see attached photo) which had been glued to the
central metal mounting was no longer glued. This was the problem.
Because it wasn't glued, it wasn't turning the disc with the contacts on that give signals to the ecu.

I would imagine other's have had this problem and that others certainly will have this same problem in the future, it's easily fixable.

I thought it was important to glue it back on in exactly the right position, so I aligned the white disc and the metal center mount thingy by looking where the old glue was, then marking both.

The hardest bit was getting the lid back on past the rim as the rim is angled inwards. I shaved the edge of the rim down with a blade quite a bit then used grips to squash it back together.

I was concerned that having fixed it, the car still may require a reset of some sort to get rid of the message.
Thankfully it didn't; the gear selection lights are on solid, there is now no select message and it goes from high to low back to high just fine.

Job done, and I'm a happy bunny.......until the next fault occurs,
probably tomorrow.

One last thing, I wouldn't recommend driving the car with the selector motor off the car, it acts as a lock, clamping the transfer box in high or low.
With it off it is possible for it to work itself into the neutral position as I found out by having no drive, in the middle of town, in rush hour.

HTH someone.
