hi all
strange fault on my 95 4.0 se auto
when starting "select neutral" came up on display, took too garage diagnosed and told needed new hi/low motor
took away and checked connector on transfer box and also all connectors under drivers seat, no problem found but when i started the car everything was back working ok. a week later the garage had the new hi/low motor and fitted it. now back too having "select neutral" as soon as you switch the ignition on. any ideas would be very much appreciated also when the indicators are used there is no sound(no tick)

Sounds to me that the selector linkage may need a little tweak. When you get the message try moving the selector forward and back a little to see if it goes.

you can move the selector from anywhere to anywhere on the h-gate the red led lights at its position and the dashboard tells you which gear your'e in
by the way i forgot to say that the green lights are all flashing.

If the green lights are all flashing then the vehicle still thinks it still trying to effect a ratio change.

What happens if you try and go into low range??

finally found out the fault
after testing all wires from hi/low motor too control unit and becm, found out that 2 of the wires in the new? hi/low motor had not been crimped into the connector, am taking it back to garage for another motor

gotta wait for a week and a half for new motor so i have disconnected the socket and linked 1,2,4 and 5 all error messages gone, gear changing as normal, indicators back to ticking.

the garage has told me that it was an awful lot of hassle to get a faulty new component replaced, and they are extremely busy, with holidays and work, so the earliest that they can have their electrical specialist there to REPAIR my NEW MOTOR is tuesday 5/8/08

you are kidding aint ya?
they have supplied a faulty motor and now want one of their "specialists" to fix it then give it you back. if they tamper with it the warrenty will be void. it is up to them to swap the unit with a new one and not complain to you about having to swap it. supply of goods act says it has to be fit for purpose, it aint so you need a new one, not some alarm fitter recrimping it and passing it off as good as new.
god it winds me up the crap that garages come out with to save themselves a bit of work:mad:

:eek: - i would of told em to foook orf and get them to replace it with a brand new one, too bad if its hassle for them! Who knows who their 'specialist' is. I really would tell them you want a brand new one as that is what you have paid for, not to have your new one repaired. Just my opinion though

FINALLY after 2 more visits, and we will need it in for a couple of days to have time to find the fault(probably so that they can decide what fault they can pretend they found and bill me for all the labour)
i borrowed a high/low motor from a mate who was working on his, fitted his, everything back to perfect.
drove it too the garage, had them try it out to prove that everything was working, gave them back my (new) motor and have been promised another new one in about 3 days, then i can give my mate his motor back

hmm, after reading the outcome to this post and then the other one about your brakes I assume this garage is the same both times?? If so, name and shame them, let us know where you are and Im sure someone will have a far better recommendation on here, ****ing around with this problem and then drilling parts of your ABS system?! - sounds like these guys are cowboys :(

-Wills

unfortunately this was at two differant garages
it was not my flexible pipe that they were drilling out ,it was some other probably unsuspecting poor soles car. i will be fitting a new flexible pipe on mine, when i get around to it.it cant be that dear for original
as i have always told everyone
brakes and steering are the main things to keep you on the road, so always use genuine components.take no risks with yours and everyone elses lives

borrowed a motor from a friend, fitted it , everything working perfect
told the garage and returned the faulty new motor asking for a new one within a week. got a reply today from them
Alan, the motor you kindly have returned us works correctly on yet another p38 range rover as Dave has mentioned already we need to have the vehicle booked in for us to look at your problem. Regards Andrew.
my reply

what problem?
as i have already told you, mine works perfectly with my mates motor on,
shifts to high, drives with no warnings. shifts to low drives with no warnings, transfers from one to tother in a couple of seconds no error messages at any time.
do you want me to come up there and show you that it is all working perfectly with his motor on
coz you already know that it does'nt work with your motor on ,coz you've tried it twice.his didn't work with it on either.
unless of course you have repaired that motor
alan

their reply
ALAN NO REPAIR HAS TAKEN PLACE TO THE MOTOR SINCE WE LAST SEEN YOU , IF YOU HAVE NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT THEN ALLOW US TO REINSTALL THIS MOTOR AS REQUESTED. PLEASE LEAVE THE CURENT S/H UNIT ON THE VEHICLE YOU ARE USING. REGARDS ANDREW

who believes that it works on their p38(unless it has been repaired again) but not on mine or my friends?
i paid for a new motor, it has been repaired once whilst i was waiting, maybe now after (not)being repaired for a 2nd time, it works and maybe will then work on mine
but a repaired motor is not what i paid for, and is certainly not what i am going to end up with

Have you already paid for this motor they supplied you, if so, how did you pay for it??

What exactly do you want to happen, do you actually want them to supply you with a brand new motor now or would you just prefer a full refund off them?? From reading the mails it doesn't sound like you really know what you want to happen.

from my last reply to them(printed below) you should have some idea.paid by cheque, already taken from account
as normal the chance of getting money back from a garage is pretty hard
so have chosen what should be the easier option.

hi andy/dave
please tell me, what is the point of me wasting even more time and petrol, going back up to your garage to have a motor that has been proved twice, by yourselves, not to work on my car.?
(1) it did not work first time, I spent 3 days testing all concerned electronics on my car,and found no faults with my car, the last thing I expected was a fault with new motor, but finally I checked it out and found out that the motor had 2 wires not connected, I could have then, according to trading standards rules and regulations, insisted on another new motor as it was,
goods & materials supplied as part of the service should be of a satisfactory quality i.e. free from defects. If the trader has failed to fulfil the above requirements then he should come back and replace the item, without additional cost.
however I didn't
(2) I brought it back, you repaired the 2 unattached wires on the motor, it still did not work on my car.so I was asked to book it in for a whole day, so that you could find out what the problem was, probably finding some sort of reason for it not working, at my expense. sorry but I was not falling for that one. I took the car to a friend of mine,( who by the way is a range rover mechanic) he removed the high/low motor from his car(same make, model, year as mine) fitted it onto mine worked perfectly, fitted your motor onto his, with all of the same faults showing as with mine, so obviously the motor is definitely at fault(only thing changed from car to car, same fault went from car to car).
(3)without anyone touching the motor I took it back up to yourselves, stating that it is definitely the motor at fault and I needed a replacement new motor ASAP as my friend needs his back soon.
(4)now apparently without anyone doing a second repair on the motor, it works perfectly on a different p38(year, model unspecified)
if this is true, then there could be only 2 reasons
(1) intermittent fault, therefore requiring new replacement .under warranty
(2)wrong motor supplied for my car. requiring correct new replacement .under warranty
So until you get a correct new replacement high/low motor for my car(without additional cost to me) I cannot see any point in coming back up there and yet again wasting yours and my time playing with my car
I await your reply, but not too long(as you know friend needs his motor back)

Alan

This is why I spend so much time reading about my car, learning all its tricks and collecting all the neccasary tools to fix it. I hate garages.

well everybody ive found the only garage i know of that is as thick as two short planks and cant even read.
here is their latest reply too my e-mail above
ALAN, I WILL ARRANGE TO PICK THE CAR UP AS AN WHEN SUITABLE FOR YOU, PLEASE CONTACT ME TO BOOK THE CAR IN REGARDS ANDREW.
i think it is now time to bring trading standards and consumer protection and maybe small claims court in.
