In Austria, we have a company called Wurth, which produce motor sealants for engines.
I've noticed that a few of the normal gaskets were replaced by silicon, especially the big end where a "T shaped" cork gasket has been superceded by silicon. Can anyone suggest which sealants are suitable?

wurth is as good if not better than most ,non acid is best as the vinegary ones work well but can cause surrounding area to rust overnight, cartridges and caulking gun are better than tubes

Jamesmartin,

I've just picked up the silicon. When it comes to the seal where the T-shaped cork part goes at the back of the block/crankshaft, I have read the cork can be omitted and the profile just filled with the silicon.
As for the sump, water pump housing, oil filter etc, can the gaskets be completely omitted in place of the silicon, or is it best to sandwich the gaskets between a layer of silicon?

Yes, filling the T-piece bits with RTV works - my 1109's engine is set up that way and has been happily leak-free (at least there) for many a year.

Personally on things that will be on and off I use gaskets. I've never had a lot of luck with RTV on things like valve cover gasket replacement - where you have tight metal-to-metal contact (like water pumps, side covers and oil-filler openings) I've had it work well. it's also good for spots like drive flanges - less likely to leak if the surfaces are slightly less than optimum.

ive been using rtv for t pieces seals for 20 years or more ,but use gaskets where you can a little rtv smeared on both sides helps and gasket errr1440g with lower part cut off is best used between block and flywheel

Jamesmartin. Is that part number correct? I can find ERR1440, but nothing showing for ERR1440g.

Gasket - Block To Bellhsg 200Tdi - Land Rover Part ERR1440

Definitely looks a better idea than mastic all over the place!
