Series 2 screaming noise when clutch is depressed

Got the series 2a station wagon fired up yesterday after after a long rebuild, just wanted to move it out of my workshop and lower the body on, and as i depressed the clutch there was a loud screaming noise and putting it in gear made it worse, so bit the bullet today and removed the engine , i am thinking that the release bearing may be the cause but after reading variouse info it seems that the early release bearings last forever due to the fact of being lubricated by the gearbox oil, does this seem right and what else would cause this.

I'd say most likely to be release bearing but if the engine is out its a 30 second job to check.
I guess you've put a new clutch in but it's still worth checking if a plate stuck, picked up or has something in it.

When you say it was screaming ingear, you mean as you were driving?

If in your rebuild you have fitted a clutch, you have put the clutch plate in the wrong way, otherwise it's the release bearing, or very dry centre bush/ bearing in flywheel.

No wanted to get it out of workshop

Freelance, i will take clutch off tomorrow and check, (hope i havn't i will never live that down), i was checking paddocks for a new release bearing a nd it looks like they dont sell the one for the series two, (shaft operated )

Forgot to mention, there is quite a bit of play in the input shaft

checked out the release bearing today, seems fine good as the day it was fitted. ordered another though just to be on the safe side, i can see what they mean about that bearing lasting forever as it gets lubricated by geabox oil , so can't think of anything else it could be

When you press the clutch does the pulley on the crank move forward

i didn't look for that, its in bits at the moment waiting for parts
