yeah yeah I can hear your laffin' (Sean :D )

Before the infamous pile 'o **** that was Scorpion went poo poo & before I knew their gear was well poo too, I got meself a winch bumper from 'em.
Surprise!!! Its rusting after 14 months.
Its a powder coated version & looks like it has surface rust in 3 places..but I think its actually rustin inside out as the pooowder coat is lifting & the orange stuff seems to be between the back of that & the steel itself-BUGGER.
This, a few weeks b4 i get me winch 'n all!

So advise please chaps...3 options...

1. Remove & take back to metal ( how easy is this on powder coat?), rust cure, prime, spray satin black.
2. Remove & send to a powder coaters to re-do the whole thing...I reckon thats gonna be a loada dosh, although...
3. Remove, take to a scrapyard & get meself A D44 one, again a loada dosh, but i dont mind savin pennies a while longer

any thoughts please :scratching_chin:

powder coating easy enuff to remove - hot air gun and a big scraper, followed by a rub down with the big wire brush on yer angle grinder

or

send it off for grit blasting

It's only a bit of rust ffs and it's hardly structural is it.

a bit of rust on a not very old £400 bumper..i never said it was structural..and i dont have rust full stop!..but it aint gonna support a winch for very long if i ignore it is it..the main point was to find out how easy it is to remove powder coat & re-apply it...

powder coating doesn't offer much protection, specially something like a bumper that's going to be subject to lots of abuse and impact - seeing as it appears to just be a visual problem at the moment why not get it chemically stripped and galvanised - then fill the inside with liquid enamal paint till it's dry then coat the outside with as many coats as you can be bothered to apply - wilkos do very cheap and VERY good spray enamel in big cans that is ideal for touching up any chips

made meself a front spot light bar for the 110 that sits just above the bumper - 5 sprayed coats of wilkos fine paint and it's still looking like new after years of abuse

tell me about it, it looks very old very quickly!

sounds like an option, Ill make some enquiries on the galv front
cheers Sean

most companys now zinc plate or galv before powder coating which is the best way, but as long as the steel is free from oil and rust etc powder coat will last for years and years as long as it is baked correctly, if the powder is lifting it wasnt baked for long enough

you can be sure Scrapiron wont have done it properly, cheaply yes properly no

im thinking if i strip & paint it myself itll be under £50...but it wont last
A new one from Devon is a few hundred!! so not ideal
If someone can galv & powder it or put a top coat on over galv myself for £200-£300 tops & itll last a good few years without corrosion ill be happy..even though the bloody thing wouldve cost me £700 in total!

why wont it last - fill the inside with waxoyl or similar and then paint multi coats of enamel on the outside - you'd struggle to spend 50 quid doing that

do it right and id bet it'll last 5 years before it needs attention, but your cardboard bumper will be in the skip long before then ;)

:) do you need to use an etching product on the galv before enamel?
