Hi got a p38 2.5 diesel, driving home today @ about 45/50mph on a slightly decline it suddenly started shaking almost out of control, it started in the steering and quickly followed through the entire body,

It felt like driving on a ploughed field @ 100. i slowed down slowly to around 30 and the shake stopped, was then fine the rest of the way home.

I'm seriously worried about it!

Anyone any ideas what it might be?

Check the obvious first, Wheel nuts tight, jack up the front check bearings, steering bushes etc. Had the same on an sj with big tyres turned out to be badly out of balance.

Good luck

checked the nuts, bearings and all bushes, found front anti roll bar bush (split one) has moved about 5mm or been poorly fitted as i had polybushes put on it 4 months ago, gonna get it sorted tmw, all other bushes look ok though so hope its just this.

not when the shaking started, and braking didnt make it worse, dont think it will be these as they were all replaced in feb, as were all bushes, shocks & steering damper. Tyres all look good too

Evening all, felt an update is in order

Have now changed the steering box as i could feel play and hear a knocking when u rotate the steering, also changed the draglink and had the tracking done.

She still shakes but nowhere near as bad

I been tring to find out more about the swivels and found this :

Land Rover Forum

Its for a disco though and i have failed to find anywhere that lists the p38 torque settings of the amount of weight resistance i should be looking for, or even how to check them for wear.
I want to try and do the swivels this weekend as i've changed everything else now n this is the job i been putting off.

I'd be greatful if anyone could have a quick look at the disco artical and let me know if it the same as doing the p38

yer it had a new 1 in january, i have ordered a replacement one that has some foam instead of oil init or something like that. The 1 a bought b4 was cheap so could be knackered.
The car is completly undriveable now and i'm out of ideas. i'll post a video on utube n link to the thread so people can see how bad it is.

@ kds thanks 4ur comment i was stumpped when i took it apart and found no shims in there but that explains it, many thanks.

Someone has posted saying to loose the polybushes, (i dont see why) there are new so i'd like to think that these aren't whats causing it as i dont wanna fork out 4 another complete set of bushes, but if u know something i dont please share,

Thanks To Everyone that has taken the time to read my posts and replied it is appreciated

Video of the shaking, i do 55mph down the road with no problems, go round the roundabout back on myself get to 48mph and she shakes about. If u listen from 1.15 secs, inside the car u can hear what sounds like a bush squeaking, i slow and it goes away and i drive home with out fault.

I have slowed the footage down when it starts and you can clearly see the wheel looks like it's about to fall off!!

p76rangie> Thanks, i have changed the panhard rob bushes aswell as everyother bush on the thing, i also done steering box, drag link assembly, tracking, steering damper, changed wheels front to back, taken the props out to make it 2wheel drive, checked ball joints, wheel bearings and theres no play, NOTHING seems to stop it

If you have replaced everything in the front end, maybe its time to look at the rear. Sorry, but I have no real experience with the shakes in a P38, but have had to deal with it a number of times in a Classic. The usual suspects are the panhard rod, or ball joints. In some cases it was the pivot bearings. which you have ball joints instead. I understand the frustration in attempting to find it.

lezbrucelee, just watched your video and your wheels dont look original p38 ie.L322 type. So i know its a long shot but do you have spigots and the correct wheel nuts for that type of wheel ? cos if not your wheels would tend to move around on the hubs at higher speeds.

dm68, Thanks foe looking they are l322 wheels and i do have the correct sprigot rings and wheel nuts, I put the new uprated steering damper on last night, i can feel that the steering is now slightly heavier and a bit morw responsive, but the shake is still there.

P76rangie, its very frustrating i wouldnt mind so much but i had a shake in it last yer too which i spent 6months chasing turned out to be a broken/cracked sprigot ring after spending loads of money, on the plus side i got a stack of spares now

As you seem to have eliminated any slop in the steering system & judging by the severity of the shake, I would strongly suspect a resonance issue. You have a number of number of non standard/original parts fitted and this combination could produce a critical frequency resonance. Therefore to eliminate this as a possibility, you will need to change out one of these elements. The wheels are the most obvious and easy to change, so try a balanced set of original wheels and see how that goes. If you do not have any to hand, is there another RR P38 owner / dealer/ specialist nearby that maybe willing to lend a set for a brief trial?
Best of luck sit looks quite frightening!
