Last week I got some good advice and a couple of pms re a potential purchase - thank you as always.
As is always the case with any car purchase, I’ve almost scared myself out of it.
I’ve decided the itch will never go and am likely to be collecting a 2003 td5.
I’m trading in an ultra reliable hilux for this (man maths).
The car in q is missing a little service hist under 60k but is now on double that with a fair bit of documentation including injector loom x 2, recent o rings and copper washers and a fair bit of work done by the lr specialist selling (all standard non scary stuff)
I thought, going for a 2003 would rid me of head issue threats, however, not only are the plastic dowels in 10p’s a threat but there’s also a trend of failure in head gallery around bank no.1. The biggest scare is that this can lead to runaway.
You’ll know by my posts and project I’m a bit of a worrier, however, I’m happiest at the weekend when music and beers on the go and I’m on a lr. Don’t know why!
So, could anyone help on the list below - I realize many things have been exhausted but I’m pushing my budget to get the new motor and car pot will take a couple months to replenish. Always a gamble but hopefully I’m lucky and do due diligence.

  • dmf breaking up - nothing new here. A modern car thing. Is it a case of when or bad luck?
  • Injector seals and loom - covered and I’ll replace loom again anyway when I do a full service myself.
  • Head cracking and potential runaway - seems I will have time to forecast this? Dipstick oil going up and other symptoms should prevent it happening? I.e I should get warning?
  • Theft - covered in many posts and thanks for help.
  • Turbo - consumable really? Can do diy
Any help is appreciated. I know i will need to work on it to keep it tip top - that’s no issue. My fear is something like a runaway or a sudden 2k turners bill without warning! I will check car over each week etc and not the person to let an issue run - it gets fixed as soon as I find.

thanks

going for 2003 doesnt rid you of head problems, but its not something id worry about, keep an eye on oil level
why change parts unless thy are known to have failed
does anyone nick d2s
dmf will let you know either by clanking or vibration should be good for over 100k

Yes, id be more concerned about leaks, rotten chassis, ecus getting crusty and old, and rusty bodywork.
They do get nicked, but not like 90/110s. DMF is easy to replace with the clutch; just compare labour times to say a Rav4! Half the price.

Thanks all. I know how to spot a bad chassis etc no prob. Just the td5 head that was a worry. As soon as car kitty is back up I’ll keep a bit aside for a Spanish head should it need it. Hopefully won’t occur and if so hopefully not until d1 has a ticket

It would break my heart to get rid of a good Hi Lux, I've always wanted one but can't find a decent one that I can afford. A lot of the older ones seem to get exported to Africa.

It is a very good motor and would no doubt make sense to keep it.
However, I miss having something outside the window that I’m proud of! That I look forward to jumping in, something with character.
Even when I drove it away for first time it was just another hilux. The sensible choice. Bought with head and no heart. Great, dependable and hard as nails.
It’s just missing something though. Perhaps I’m making a mistake. Perhaps I should go for a forester Sti,something that makes my grin when I floor it...
I don’t really drive fast anymore though, there’s cameras everywhere and when not there’s traffic. I’d also be precious about throwing my gear and dog in something nice.
I want to make something mine again, have it all set up inside how I want etc and that vehicle needs to be shoot ready, ok for meetings, dog ready, tough and non depreciative as much as possible

I'd still keep the Hilux..

You have a D1 ;)

that’s the head choice but my heart says different. I’m going to go and see if I fall in love and if I do it’s meant to be lol.
Hilux is cleanest it’s ever been due to window shopping with view to a px
