Yes indeed Mr Quavey it's from a E39, I think I might night that chaps details.

Where would one find the hardware version?

I have been trying the hold down menu button truck for several days now, not constantly you understand :/ But it does noyhing

In order to look at the service menu, you first need to go into "set" which will probably only be available for a minute or two after startup. Once in the "set" menu hold down the Menu button for 10 seconds and it should enter service mode.

HW version is listed on the top of the navigation computer you will need to withdraw the computer from its housing in the boot but there is no need to disconnect any cables. I would recommend waiting for it to shutdown (30 seconds or so after ignition of) before pulling it out with the removal tools just in case you disturb a cable. Ok thanks for that, let me know how you get on once yours is back. I think I'll do similar and send it off.
I don't even get the set option come up, just gps navigation or monitor off, even on first start up. Anyway will leave it for now and see how you get on!!
