Sat Nav/Audio Loss - 2005 Range Rover

Hi – I have just joined the LandyZone looking for advice. I’m pleased to find such an active web-site and forum!
I have a 2005 Range Rover which has developed a curious problem with the whole Sat Nav/Audio system. The screen now only displays the Land Rover emblem; the audio on/off button orange light flashes and that’s about it – Total loss of any functions, audio etc. The trip computer still provides data (fuel consumption, range etc) in the read-out at the base of speedo area, so not a complete system loss perhaps (?). All related fuses are fine and no pre-warning (one morning at start up, it just stopped working and has not worked since), or potentially related incident such as jump leads/flat battery etc.
The car is booked in for a service at a dealer next week (Amsterdam), but I took the car for a quick pre-visit today for the service man’s inspection and preliminary diagnosis. They had not seen the fault before and the recommendation after fiddling with the fuses, was to order new modules and kit (located behind the left hand cover in the boot) and try them – Estimate 1,000 Euro plus, if this approach indeed works. So, please has anyone else had a similar fault experience, or a more structured recommendation?

Just joined today about 3 minutes ago actually.

Anyway just had the exact same thin on my RR. It turned out to be some slight corrosion on the connections that feed the radio behind the left hand cover in the boot.

The radio is hard to get to as it is the lowest unit in the area and goes slightly under the boot floor.

Key out of ignition and check all connections for corrosion then clean them and put them back.

I had now power to the radio at all - SAT NAV TV all worked but had no sound.

All fixed now!!

Thanks for the feedback buddy - I'll have a go at locating any corroded connections over the weekend, before the Dealer takes a look on Monday and racks up the bills!

Well, my Range Rover was serviced Monday, but no progress with the Sat Nav/Audio loss apart from it’s probably been caused by corrosion of the Sat Nav unit connectors and internals due to water ingress through the rear window pillar (it doesn’t look that obvious to me). This is a “known fault” which was described along the lines of originating with the black metal pillar covers at the rear being held by pin/fasteners through the rear pillars themselves and these pins sometimes permits rain water to enter the area where all the audio and sat nav racks are set! The recommendation was to order a new sat nav unit (the bit the disc sits in) and its paired Nokia GPS unit on top (they are a matching set apparently, so no point just replacing one as the GPS communication will fail) at a cost of some €2,500! Note, this cost is from a dealer in The Netherlands, but might be cheaper back in the UK? So, I am going to have another go at dismantling the sat nav unit more fully and investigating the ‘alleged’ corrosion and perhaps seek a reconditioning route, or recover units from a write-off/scrapped RR vehicle..........sad! Not wishing to dwell on the faults, but this and other “issues” have put me off the Land Rover brand somewhat.

Sorry to hear about that, it's rubbish to think you will have to pay that amount of money for a known fault.

Land Rover should cough up and help us out with these things.

Give the cleaning a go and see what you can do - oh just remembered the people who sorted mine out also had to change the radio fuse as it had blown due to the corrosion.

No joy - I have inspected every connection going behind the left cover in the boot area. No signs of damp/corrosion anywhere. So I don't think the potential leak that can occur in the rear pillar area is happening in this case.

I tried ignition on with the sat nav unit removed - No difference.

You say that the radio fuse had to be changed in your car - I assume you mean one of the fuses located in the glove box area, as I didn't find any other in-line fuses etc.?

I'm at a loss what to do next, or just go ahead and get a new sat nav/Nokia unit ordered through Land Rover (somehow, I don't believe this will cure it anyway).

Where did you take your car? I am back in the UK in September so I could take my car to the same place, or a UK LR dealer and see if they can diagnose any better.

That's a shame there is a small fuse below the large black plug that connects to the radio in the boot area and I believe that was the one they changed.

I used a 4x4 specialist called Les Potts in Sunderland in Tyne and Wear.

Good guys the owner is Les Potts and he is great to deal with very helpful.

Think my bill (which the garage I got it from paid for!!) was £360 approx.

Finally had the problem diagnosed and solved by Hartwell, Northampton – A telephone module needed to be replaced – Initial estimate for a new order module was some 400 GBP plus, but the dealer managed to find one from stock and fitted for 300 GBP – Hi-Fi, Sat Nav all working again, but telephone Bluetooth absent still (needs further investigation)........

Bluetooth active now so the system back in full working order.
