Need some info on sand blasting or similar, was a thread on a while ago by MHM i think but cant find it (search function my arse) anyone got a link to it please.

Yes i followed the link from his posts, but wanted to have a read back over the earlier thread. If i dont get any joy then i will, thanks.

No worries, I've found 'search' and 'my replies/topics' don't seem to work reyt we'll at times . ;)

What's up wickford can I help

Hopefully you can. In the process of stripping down the S2. Some parts I would like to blast, metal bonnet frame valence and other steel bits prior to galv, but may need to do some ali panels, these are to large to fit in a blast cabinet wanted to know if I could just do it in my workshop, can I blast ali? and what gun and grit? i might need, I have a good sized compressor,
Any info would be a great help. Thanks

The steel bonnet frame must be coverd underneath with somthing like damp proofing ect or else it can warp photo the bonnet. As for aluminium if its cast normally we use plastic granules first as these generate less heat if covered in paint ,a gentle low grit blast ( shallow angle )masking delicate areas like brass bushes or similar and finish with glass bead to seal the alloy and give a finished sheen look if painting leave after grit for a profile for paint to stick .:) if its aluminium bonnets its a whole new ball game paint must be stripped with industrial paint strippers and Carefull scraping , pull type are best with, in conjunction with plastic ones once all paint it stripped as close to the aluminium as possible steam cleaned to remove residues of chemical .

A grit based media is used ( not glass bead to fierce)

Moving the blasting nozzle in wide sweeps avoiding concentrating in one small area a shallow angle must be used at all time with a pressure of around 20psi

I forgot in answering your question as to gun media type the home types don't really allow you to alter the grit feed or pressure as they are based on vacume feed unlike a gravity Fed pressurised pot alowing you to alter the valve for say weaker richer media being that there is all differnt sizes of media used from fine soda crystals lime aluminum oxide garnet steel shot that can come in various size formations and the pressurised pot can be alterd in pressure from 20 to 120 psi so you have more control with what material you are blasting .

So with the home type I would suggest you could try a getting an extended hose from your blast cabinet allowing it to only be used as the feeder alowing you to blast in your work shop with proper air and eye protection , although you could suffer from a lack of pressure due to the extension hose . A home version like MHM could suffice have a chat with him and the steel parts will be fine and as long as you strip the aluminium of as much paint as possible it can be possible to finish the aluminium forming a clean minute profile for fresh paint without distorting the pannel

Thanks for that, will leave the Ali alone and just use paint stripper, the bonnet frame is removed from bonnet.I don't have a cabinet , is there a cheapish way to just do the metal bits by buying a gun.

There are gun alone types the have bags atatched that are fed by air compressor line , but these units are for small delicate stuff the set up mhm has is a good enough for small frames ect it can do say a pannel but the size these guns cover is small and time consuming for larger items .until you go into the industrial type of the smallest type and compressor needed would be past a £1000 and in your case not worth it unless you were doing it other than a hobby or your a Rich git : p

Thanks for that. Gives me something to think about, not a rich git.Got to go now the Bentley is getting wet.

I bought a sand blaster attachment for my karcher , it worked well but boy does it make a mess
