Hello people and all the best for this new year. My 1984 110 is clunking on take-up. Have been told that as it has salisbury diff, it cannot be replaced but needs to be taken apart and faulty part replaced. Also confused about how many splines on a salisbury diff. Have heard conflicting things. Do they have 10 and 24 spline models? I figured if anyone knows, they'll be members of this forum! Thanks for your attention.

as POAH says 24 spline and 4 pin centre just take mine out to remove a couple of shims i left in when i fitted the detroit will require an axle spreader to get the diff out as its pre loaded

Are they 100% sure its the rear diff and not the gearbox main shaft its at that age like mine is Jai

Thanks for replies,
dont think its the gearbox as the thump sure sounds like its from the back of vehicle. It has had a new propshaft fitted about 12 months ago, and its done about 300k in its life.
If one were to consider changing the diff, is it worth buying an axle spreader and any other special tools, or would it be better to replace the whole axle using 'pre-owned' bits from breakers?
Any advice greatfully received, especially those that dont involve spending £1000 or more:).

To be fair you cant get a spreader cheaply, might just be worth taking it to the garage and saying how much and get a gurantee with it. Jai

Simple but have you checked bushes, a-frame ball joint?
Dony know how much salisbury axles are but swapping to a standard rover axle would be cheap enough. plus you'd have discs if you go rangey/disco.
Depends how hard you work it/ how strong you need it!
