salisbury axle problems

I Have Recently Put A Disc Braked Salisbury On My 90 With A Custom Made Propshaft From Propshaft Clinic.when Driving In 4th & 5th If I Let My Foot Off Accelorator I Have A Vibrating,rumbling Noise Coming From The Rear Axle(i Think).it Never Done It With My Normal Drum Braked 90 1 On.i Have Taken Prop Off And Drove In Difflock And There Is No Noise,if I Put Prop On And Take Shafts Out The Noise Is Even Worse,the Rear Axle Has Had,new Shafts,drive Members,wheel Bearings,discs & Pads And The Noise Will Still Not Go,i Am Still Going Crazy Trying To Find Out What It Is,ive Ruled T/f Box Out Cos It Didnt Do It With My Other Axle And It Dont Do It In Difflock,im Convinced Its The Axle But People Tell Me That They Never Break.any Help I Would Appreciate Cheers

If (like you say) it doesn't do it when the difflock is engaged it can't be the rear diff. The diff will still be rotating wether difflock is engaged or not. All the centre diff does is to lock the front and rear propshafts together. I would be looking for sticky handbrake drum, prop uj's knackered or incorrectly aligned or prop on too greater an angle myself.

Hi,the Propshaft Is A Wide Angle With 4 Inch Sliding Joint Its Only 3 Days Old,when The Prop Is On It Makes The Noise In Diff Lock Or Normal,if I Take The Prop Off And Engage Diff Lock So I Can Drive It Deosnt Do It,i Have Also Took Hand Brake Drum Off And On Aswell,if I Put Prop On And Take Rear Shafts Out The Noise Is Even Worse.cheers

but it only makes the noise in 4th and 5th correct?

Yes When I Accelorate Its Fine But As Soon As I Remove My Foot Of The Pedal It Makes A Rumling Noise& Vibrates It Deos Feel As If Its Coming From The Back Definatly

did ya greese yer prop afore ya put it on ??? i doubts its yer diff theys rock hard them salisburys....

you could try undoin yer prop and rotatin it .. it could be a balance troublem ..

Yes And It Was Fully Greased By Propshaft Clinic,i Did Have A Shortend Lr Prop On At 1st And I Thought It Was The Yokes Because They Looked Dead Close(nearly Touching)so I Orderd That New Wide Angle Prop,put It On And It Made No Difference,i Aslo Think It Could Be The Pinion Bearings In The Axle But Again People Say That They Rarely Go Wrong,i Have Also Had A Person On Another Forum Say It Could Be Transfer Box But It Never Done It On My Old Axle

Have a chat with the propshaft clinic but it sounds to me like prop angle is your problem. A prop shaft (even a wide angle one) running at a wide angle constantly is bound to make a noise and vibrate cos the uj's aren't rotating smoothly.

Did you off-set both halves of the prop by 45 deg to each other to help balance the weight?

sounds to me like it's simply because your prop shaft angle is too steep, the nose on a salisbury is longer than on a rover axle hence the need for a shorter prop shaft. As for phasing the prop UJs out by 45 degrees, this only applies to axles whos drive flange points to the gearbox output flange rather than being paralell to it.
Whilst you havn't mentioned it, is the vehicle lifted in the suspension department? If so then it's just making the problem worse.

yes the vehicle is lifted,it was lifted 2 inch bowt 4 months ago,i have put me normal rover axle back on yesterday and the noise aint there,i beginning to think that it is the prop now,thanks for those who replied to my post

I have a very similar problem on my 110 200tdi.

I THINK it is lifted, I bought it as is and it looks a little highter than normal, but I thought that might be down to tyres - they are big BF things - anyway, at motorway speeds, say above 50, if I take my foot off the throttle,I get exactly the same symptoms until it gets to around 45 mph, then it smooths out and the noise goes.

Is the common consensus that I have a problem with my rear prop shaft then ? I have greased all the u/js.

Any help much appreciated.
