Hello. I was driving along today, and noticed a new noise in my 2a, an unfamiliar clunky, grindy, slightly worrying. I thought it may have been because I had tightened the handbrake a bit too much, as it seemed to come from that sort of area.. anyway, all of a sudden, I heard a loud bang, and we (my seven year old daughter, and I) were sharply pulled into the grass verge, off the road, to the sound of skidding... Hmmm. as I tried to move it further off the road, it made a nastly grindy growly sound... the rescue man says it is the diff... looking up about Salisbury diffs, I need some advice, please. Could it be: a) the halfshaft snapped? b) the actual diff splines, or c) something else? and could this mean a big job, firast finding a Salisbury Axle, or can I change the diff? All advice gratefully recieved. sad landy and owner waiting:(

I agree with g spot.
If the rear wheels wont turn then its probably a knacked diff rather than a half shaft, but do check to be sure.
You can get the guts to go in the diff, its not a really hard job, but its a crappy one.

if yer near me i have a Salisbury i took of my series 3 that you can have for £30(or near offer), it need a pinion bearing but if yours is buggered it'll be cheaper to get a new set of bearings in that than it would be to get yours fully rebuilt

Thannks. I'll check it in the mornin, I got a feeling, talking to my bro-in-law, it's the half shafd, but wil check, cheers, Im in Pilton, nr Shept Mallet, I must say thanks to the guy who stopped in a white 110 to check I was ok, (I had my bonnet up). Such great support here too, many thanks guys, and gals. I may still need that axle, tho. cheers. Got to keep it on the road, it's the only wheels I got. :D

if it's the only wheels you've got and you need to be mobile, you can take the rear prop off and slide out the rear axle halfshafts, stick the 'box in 4wd and keep going on front wheel drive only. it's not great but I've got a mate up here who did just that for months.

Taken the driver side half shaft out, that's ok, can't get the near-side one out.. at first I thought it was because it is snapped, but when I put it back in, it does turn the cogs in the diff.. (I took the pan off the back)???? So if those are both ok, I tried waggling the prop about, it seems tight, but when I took the handbrake off, and turn the prop, it makes a not-very-free-noise, and it can get hard to turn, that's with both half shafts dis-engaged...
What is inside there, that could be wrong? is there bearings? or is it another cog? I can't see in there, or get to it.. Thanks.

Well, I tried to get the near-side half-shaft out, but it gets stuck at the end, I also then tried to take the hub nut off, some joker before me has cross threaded it! si it was cold chiselling it all the way out!! but realising that then the bearing nut would also have to be chiselled out, I disparingly put it back together. So does that mean if I can't get the half shaft out, it is fooked? and then if I cant get the bearing out, I would need to get the hub off, and change those bits? if so, would it be just as well to get new axle to make sure other bits are ok? as it has been running dry for a little while, (rather than leaking on the floor) incidently, while I was there I took the brake drum off, and inside was really oily!!! eeek! cheers.

Well, I have managed to get help with the axle, we got it apart, and it seems that the bearings are shot!! and also the pinion has knife edge blades!! basically I have been a dick:doh:, and haven't topped the diff up with oil..... it had been leaking out, and I hadn't been filling it back up, so it got so hot, that the bearings died... oh well, I have learned a good lesson there!! I will be hoping my mate has got his 2 salisbury axles in that barn, he put there 6 years ago!! fingers crossed! my bro-in-law is going to help me re-fit the axle. Many thanks for your help.

The axles in the barn have gone to the great scrapyard in the sky!! will be needing a salisbury axlefor a 109" series 2a, fairly near to somerset! ASAP!! cheers guys. Gem
