Salisbury Axle brake swap?

Its only my third post and I posted this in the wrong section so here goes-
Sorry if this has been done before but I couldnt find what I needed from a search.

I have a '97 Defender 110 with a salisbury axle and disk brakes The diff is very worn and I have obtained another Sailsbury axle from an earlier model 110. There is massive backlash and clunking between every gear change and when the axle is jacked up I can turn the hub nearly half a turn before the diff moves. The exchange part has actually done less mileage than my own and I have the opportunity to clean and paint it before putting it in. The axle that I have sourced had drum brakes and what I want to know is if I can swap the disks off my current axle and replace the drums with them? and if so what is involved.
I dont have the greatest amount of mechanical experience but i am learning as I go along. I though a complete axle change would be easier for me than to start messing with diffs which are way out of my comfort zone. plus the replacement axle was only €100

paint it well hammerite smooth satin black is perfect,you would need to strip complete wheel staions back to case and swap your old bits including halfshafts ,leave off mudshields as drum axle doesnt have hole in shock absorber bracket and they are more of a problem than without, all parts apart from diff and case are different but swap

fit case first then put your disc wheel stations on (less weight to shift about) rtv silicone sealant is as good as gaskets and easier
