Safe to drive?

Hi folks,

My first query comes up as I get a crunch when going into 2nd gear (from 1st and 3rd) and believe that I need a replacement gearbox/transmission. Does this sound right?

I used it the other day and just avoided 2nd altogether which seemed fine, but am due to drive a 350 mile trip this weekend and wondered whether it was safe to do so? Any thoughts appreciated.

Seems like the syncro cones are worn,a change of oil may help in the short term.Also try doing the blip change, that is as you change after you take it out of 1st or 3rd pause for a moment and blip the throttle then go into second.If no major bits in oil then you should be good to go.

In an r380? I just used to pull out of 1st, let it spring into the Middle, then select 2nd. You get used to it.

in dodgy car seller speak "they all do that"

but honestly after a while most do, dont worry about it , maybe change the oil but its a landy, its an R380 it is going to crunch into to second, more likely than not.

Change the oil it does help, cheapo atf works fine, reckon on twice a year, you can tell it needs changing as change down into second gets worse.
Mines been like it for years.
Do not use the flash syn oil as it make the fault much worse.

Pause in neutral while changing, to allow the gears to mesh better.
As long as you don't crunch the gears you will do no harm. Even if you do, it's unlikely anything will fall apart, although you will eventually damage the gear teeth.

or learn to double declutch ...

Many thanks for the replies folks. I'll change the oil and see how we get on. No issues on the trip up North this weekend thankfully. Need to practice the alternative shift methods but have already had some success and it now appears to be more intermittent an issue.

Learn how to double de clutch or change the syncro cones.

id strip box and change baulk rings and bearings, you will damage the gear dog teeth and synchro hub in time,apart from the debris implanting itself in all other parts

+1 for that, the best solution is to fix the box of course. Depends on how deep your pockets are at the minute.
