Hi im looking at safari snorkels at the moment but they seem very pricey.

There are some safari "style" ones that the seller is claiming are just as good and at a fraction of the price:

Landrover discovery 1 300 tdi / v8 snorkel great quality ABS model safari | eBay

Land Rover Discovery 1 V8 / 300 ABS Safari Snorkel kit | eBay

Has anyone any experience with the snorkels? are the cheap ones worth avoiding or are the genuine ones over priced?

Also Ive found one online from a 2.5 tdi but the seller doesnt know if it will fit mine?

Mines a 1996 discovery 3.9 V8 fitted with ABS.

Cheers.

I don't think the safari style are made of the same quality material as the original safari ones,is the airbox on the v8 in the same place as the tdi?

I bought a southdown style snorkel as there was no way i was paying the price for a new safari.

Yep I was under the impression that they were pretty vehicle specific and I even got given one that a bloke mistakenly bought for his 3.5 but as mine had ABS it wouldn't fit (it was about 6 years a go and i was a lot more clueless).

A lot on ebay say "fits both the V8 and TDI models" so thats what got me thinking.

I've also been looking at those ebay ones, I have a 300tdi abs which they say will fit, but like you I'm not sure about the quality.

I think the 300tdi and the V8 have the same airbox so as long as you get the ABS version I think it will fit.

I was about to order one of the 'safari style' ones but read a thread on here about the amount of modifying that the parts needed in order to fit and that put me off. I ordered a southdown off ebay, around £140, only 1 hole to cut and all fitted in a couple of hours. Really pleased with the southdown.

The difference in quality of material is enormous: Safari - Snorkels :)

i have a lrparts safari style, fitting was nice and easy and i didn't have to modify anything out of the ordinary, its taken some hammering and it still works!

I was unsure about what to go for and weighed everything up about 2 months ago:

Expensive mantec or safari style - £200 upwards = Too pricey

Homemade one - £50ish quid (Allowing for bracketry, pipework, connectors etc. = Expensive and time consuming, especially if it turns out badly

Cheaper made one - £100 quid - Looks better than home made, cheap enough to not break the bank, should have more confidence in it working than homemade one, = Best option

So I bought the LRParts safari style snorkel, and it was a bitch to fit, since one or two of the parts required altering, and there was a tense moment, where the template had made me drill the holes in the wrong place and I didn't think the snorkel would fit (a bad workman blames his tools, bla bla bla). However it looks the part, works nicely, and seems better made than I expected given the bad press cheaper snorkels get with regard to plastic quality etc. If I was planning on a long term trip to somewhere very hot, I would have definitely gone for a better quality one, however in rainy old england, worrying about a the longevity of plastic under high UV stress is something I don't really care for. Especially when the snorkel might actually only be used for deep wading a few times a year.

One comment though, is that my fuel economy seems to have suffered slightly, and the engine does seem to lack a bit of power. Could be down to something different, or it may be that I have a blockage in the air intake, but something you may want to consider. On the other hand, some people report an engine which breathes better once a snorkel is fitted. I plan to swap the air ram top, to a pre-cleaner type top and see if that makes a difference:confused:

Anyway, good luck. Thats my two pence.
