Evening all,

My recently acquired lightweight is leaking diff oil from the rear wheel hub. I stripped it back to find the previous owner (or any of the 9 before him!) hadn't fitted a hub oil seal at all.

I popped out today to buy a bearing kit which comes with the hub axle seal and for the life of me I cannot figure this out...

I get the seal (double lipped type; double lips facing inwards towards centre of hub) fitted, driving home with the old bearing shell and when I got the assembled wheel hub over the stub axle it is really tight and binds like mad.

Is it correct that the oil seal is constantly revolving around the stub axle? The fact that there wasn't an oil seal previously means the stub axle is pretty crusty and pitted. I have cleaned it up the best I can but it's certainly not smoothly and shiny. I'm guessing a greased rubber seal revolving around a rough stub Axle isn't so good?

Is it right that I had to drive the seal home and flush with a mallet? Regardless of the state of the stub axle, I can't help but think something is not right with that seal.

If you're wondering, it's for a 1981 lightweight with same size bearings.

Any input is grateful!

Thanks
Duncan
