Rusty wheel nuts fix?

Hi guys,

My Disco 1, 1991, is getting a few rusty wheel nuts. I wire brushed them back to a shine, but within a month they start to brown again.

The protective coat (galvanised?) is probably gone and I presume I polished the bare steel to a shine. That is not gonna hold long here in the land of the horizontal rain.

I know I can just buy new nuts !

But for the real mechy, is there a way to treat them so they hold their shine for a while ?

Machine polish to a shine then hard lacquer but it may only last for a year or so.
You could electroplate them but the kit is more expensive than a complete of set of new nuts.

Why not just put plastic covers on them?

I've had some of these in the past - absolute rubbish. They split within weeks, don't touch them.

I just brush some old engine engine on them, keeps 'em clean.

I know some options now.

I think I'll try polishing them and then a clear lacquer pray after fitting.

Needs redoing after taking a nut off, but that's no prob.

Ps, maybe a thin coat of vaseline (?) will do
