Rusty holes in chassis - replace who thing or repair?

Just been poking around with a screw driver and found some massive holes held together only by the paint in the rear chassis of my 109 series 2a. Is it worth repairing and getting a rear quarter chassis, just patch it up, or save up for a propa new chassis?

The age old dilemah.
Long term, patch plating works out the more expensive way to go.
Cutting in quarter sections, or new sections saves welding costs, makes a better job, but more expensive than plating.
Buying complete new chassis (which you know its going to get to needing at some point) is effoff expensive in the one 'hit' and a big chunk of work, but once done, you can forget about it for another twenty years or so, and you have the piece of mind of knowing that its structurally as good as it can be.
Depends on your wallet and circumstances as which is 'best'.
 
first off whats it used for ? on road? if so, rear quarter , or x-member swap, if its a project for years to come, get a galvo chassis
 
Plan is (or perhaps was) to get it MoT'd again and start to use it to replace my disco for the odd train station run, load lugging, dragging stuff across the field and to start to do some propa off roading.

I doubt it's gonna pass MoT with oles like this in it, so I might patch it the best I can. My worry is that in trying to find some solid metal to weld to I run out of chassis and find that it's all made of rot and paint.
 
You need to have a good look underneath and asses the rest of the chassis.

I put a rear quarter onto my Series trialler years back and the rest of the chassis is and has been fine.

A rear quarter is a bit more work on a LWB because the tank is located up under the rear floor, so you have that to contend with as well as the loom in the o/s chassis leg.

Personally a rear quarter (or whatever is required) is a good half way house between patching and replacing.
 
You seem to be in a similar spot to me, I started poking around mine when I got it. The pic' below is the rear crossmember.

I've decided to go for a new crossmember with extensions and rear spring hangers.... this is where I'm at today.
