Just read this lot as been away, all day. I'll see if I can source a pump and go over one evening this week with a big worklamp and a box of tools. or take a day off work and do it then. Mrs B will sort it with you later on, off for a bath now.

test yer thermostat by puttin it in a pan of water and slowly bringing it to the boil, you should see it open before the water boils... fink they open about 85deg.. it will be stamped on there

oddly I was gonna post on here that the noise could be that...

also had another thought in the car in the way home just now that perhaps the fan was stuck open hence the noise and the overcooling...

been thinking about you a lot since you posted in the flashing thread.... ;)

no.. my power steering seemed to die on me half way home.... steering got really heavy 1/2 way round a roundabout... and I thought to myself **** bollocks piece of **** car.. then I thought.. I wonder if that's what's wrong with Mrs B's motor....

I could get it round lol.. just felt like it was gonna rip the wheels off to do it...

seemed OK putting it on the drive so might have just had a funny few seconds to catch me off guard while I was concentrating on images of hot ladies flashing from the back of landrovers ;0

Sounds like static fan seized to me i.e rotating all the time, that's why engine is cold and the whirring sound is the fan turning. Start it from cold then immediately check the fan. If it's turning, it's seized. I replaced mine, 2nd hand £40 and took about 2 minutes to change.
