I'm fitting a 200tdi in to my series 3. I don't have the defender/disco radiator and intercooler setup and space is a little too tight to fit any other intercooler. I was wondering how the engine would perform without an intercooler? I wouldn't mind losing 10 or so hp as I'm using the series 3 gear box.

Hi there, I have heard of a tdi engine being run without an intercooler without any real problems although I have not seen or heard it running. I would imagine. Series g/box and brakes and an on song tdi might be a bit much for it. Best of luck.

it will be ok with no cooler just loose a few horses my fender had a turbo but no intercooler and my vw van dont have an intercooler either :) still be loads more power than your old engine

Get a 300Tdi intercooler (about £20 2nd hand) and fit it in the radiator panel on the near side and run the pipes past the side of the radiator. It is possible to run a Series rad and separate oil cooler or just blank off the oil cooler out lets at the filter end.

No problem at all, just do it.I'm going to do exactly the same thing with my S3 when I finally get around to doing it.
If you look at brochures for diesel engine manufacturers you would see that often the same motor gets sold in different power ratings - often naturally asperated, then turbo, then turbo intercooled.
As said a healthy full on TDI is pushing a standard S3 box if you boot it.
