yes i meant the casing open with the inside of the axle exposed to water etc.

Surely its just a case of undoing drive flanges on front wheels, pulling half shafts out and bunging the holes up? Until you can get some parts in.

well i took the diff out too cuz i wanted to see what was going on in there (broken cross shaft again..). but i wish i was that easy to get the half shafts out...

i'd have pulled the prop as well.. and left the diff in

No not on fronts. you have cv Joints in the way.

No it is a lot more complicated with a front diff, I have done it several times. You have to remove the Hub. It is all to do with the the CV joint.
It is very different from a rear diff.

You can do as suggested earlier and strip the diff and put the empty casing on, or you can use plastic bags and a lot of tape.
Oil in the axle casing attracts dirt as you would never believe and this will cause problems in the future.
If you are going to drive the car you need to protect the axle inside as it will be an impossible job to clean it out as it is not just the diff casing that collects dirt but also the axle tubes that go to each front hub.
You do not want any contamination in the axle, either dirt or water as it may cause further damage in the future.

I've been running in rear wheel drive only on my disco 1 for about 3 months now, blew a diff and when it exploded it took lumps out if the axle too so currently looking for a complete front axle for mine, but finding funds and motivation are both low at the moment so it's not moving so quickly.
If you already taken out the diff and shafts and whipped the prop off then it's job done for now, the handling is a little different but as I said mine has been like that for at least 2 or 3 months and is driven at least a couple of times a week and all is well, the tranny box is full of slop anyway so if it kills anything I'm not that worried as it all needs replacing anyway, but in answer to your question mine is still going 3 months later without any lasting damage that I can see.

Im more worried about water than dirt as its in the middle of the rainy season here and there is always a road that is flooded somewhere. Without the shafts im afraid the dust caps wont help much if i have to drive through any amount of water.
mounting back up the empty diff seems like the way to go and its easy enough.
