Hello all knowing landyzone folk!

I have an issue on my J reg 200tdi 110.....I actually have several but its just this one I need help with.

When in 5th gear and travelling at 60mph when I take my foot of the accelerator I get a loud rummble noise and vibration coming from the middle of the car as soon as the car slows down to around 50mph it goes away, it also does it in 4th but to a lesser extent but still only inbetween 50-60mph.

Oils changed not too long ago in both boxes, diffs, swivels etc.

I have run the vehicle stationary with the transfer box in neutral and there are no clunks, grinds or vibrations from the gearbox.

I have discovered that my A frame ball has gone and the bushes so a polybush kit is on order

Has anybody experienced anything like this if so what was the cause/causes or could anybody point me in the right direction of possible suspects.

Many thanks in advance.

Agree, UJ is liikely. Get underneath it, grab the end of the propshaft and give it a good wiggle in all directions. A knackered UJ will have slack.

Thanks guys propshafts are brand new, no play anywhere and packed with grease.

Could it be transferbox bearings, input shaft gear, rear transfer box flange bearings?

I will let you know, will be trying that on Sun. Seems odd that it would be that but, its a defender so owt is possible.

I'm fairly certain that it will be that, sort that as a process of elimination. It's eSy enough to do, but still a bit of a pig.

T/box it doesn't necessary present as you've described, it can do but I wouldn't have thought the way you've described it. Do you have a whine.?! When my T/box went there was a notable knock pretty much all of the time. Get your A Frame sorted and I think you'll cure it!

Or and check your suspension dampers, one of my bottom nuts a snapped off, this also caused exact issue describe. Still think it's your A Frame and bushes tho. ;)

Could it be the bearing for the input flange on the diff? My mates disco had similar symptoms, and it turned out the bearing was FUBAR.
I'd still do the a-frame ball joint and bushes first though, worth eliminating that issue so you can be sure! :)

Definitely fix the A frame ball joint and bushes first. It's amazing how much noise will resonate through the whole vehicle if you've got metal to metal with a knackered bush.

Well, A frame bushes and ball joint replaced (self levelling unit removed) the clonks and other associated effects are gone but the original problem is still there. I did notice that if I ease off the accelerator very steady I dont get the vibration and rumbles. I did discover today that my near side rear wheel has a small amount of play, the bearings are only about 3 months old so hopefully I just need to nip it up to the right torque. I am thinking its the transfer box. But would welcome more input.

So, I have done the propshaft tests and isolated the issue to the rear of the vehicle. There is a noticable bearing hum/rumble when driving(not there with the rear propshaft off)

So, is it pinion bearings or output flange bearings on the transfer box?

If it was rear output flange bearing, with the rear shaft off should the problem manifest itself or would it only do it under load with shaft attached?

Anybody got any links to doing the pinion bearings on a salisbury axle, would I be better off with a 2nd hand diff?

All help gratefully received, thanks!

It would be helpful if both of you could post a YouTube video showing the problem.

I don't know if a video would pick up the effects, but I'll have a crack at it tomorrow. I'll cable tie one of my kids to the A frame with a camera.......Joking people, no need to call social services, I'll use the Mrs instead!
