Evening guys and girls.
This one has got me stumped. Motor packed up christmas eve, on the bloody motorway.

Suspected coil failier after a nice bloke stopped to help me out. He tested system, Power to coil sod all out of it. So changed coil, it started and ran for 5 seconds. Then nothing. Got another new coil, still nothing. ran all tests I can find in the Staines manual. All checks lead to coil being good. Amp being good etc etc. the only thing that is amiss, is the fact that I get a voltage reading when testing battery positive to coil negative with ignition off. Should be no voltage.
This happens even with the amp connector unpluged.
ECU at fault?

Any suggestions greatly appreciated

try taking live feed off coil, replace with feed direct from batt if no spark coil fault if spark ign fault. might not cure but should help find what is faulty. good luck

Regarding the amp I swapped it out and put another dizzy in , it ran for a while, timed it, switched it off to do up the clamp, woudnt restart and never run since WTF!

Got two amps here. Both are known be good. All wiring in engine is ok.
Getting a live feed with ignition off and amp unplugged. That shouldn't be right surely.
Going to try Albert's suggestion in morning.

Another thing, my battery went flat overnight I had charged it that day, fully, so check to see if you have the same problem-well I guess you will find out lol

look at boomers thread, start from the beginning-have you got a pulse from pickup. (incorrect air gap or damaged pickup)

Next any short to earth on wiring will stop it switching can be checked with a meter.

Did test suggested by albert. Still nothing. Re tested everything, coil, pickup, amp etc. everything showed ok. Just for the hell of it tested pickup off old dizzy, got much higher readings than the one on car, so swapped them. got a fantastic spark. Put it all together and it fired up and died straight away.
So re did alberts test but this time left all cables on coil. Got a huge spark from king lead to top of ram housing. stuck king lead back on and it ran nicely sounding better than ever.
So stripped off the steering column shroud. OMG what a mess. Scotch locks and bullet connectors everywhere. moved a few wires, got sparks from somewhere and the door locks went nuts.
Turns out it was the old crappy alarm/immobilser that was causing the fault. So removed all of it. Even got my rev counter back now too.

So thanks to everyone for help and advice, especially Uncle Albert. Wouldn'y have thought of removing steering shroud but for his tip.
