As your engine is an indirect injection one,from cold it will need glow plugs to start it.Every morning - so its probably not them,fuel running back because of perished leak off pipes or a slow cranking speed because of low battery voltage are much more likely.

does it start easier when you have a full tank of diesel?

A friend of mine has a diesel VW camper van and had starting issues. After replacing the glow plugs, hey presto starts first time.
I'd do the cheapest option first....then if not fixed move on to the next culprits...starter motor, alternator etc.
