Hi,is there a knack to changing into low box?,i have an 1986 vogue auto, from the normal driving position(bottom right, high range no diff lock)i can move the transfer box lever to the left to engage diff lock and the light comes on the dash to indicate this is working, however from here i cant move the lever forwards to engage low box, could it be seized, not had car long and previous owner(12 years)didnt use off road, please help, thanks, chris.

Probably just seized, I had the same with my previous RRC (1986 3.5EFI).

I got it loose just by trying to move it hard on daily basis. It took a while (a couple of weeks), but eventually the shifter started to move and I got the box into low gears.

when i am in high range,i can engage the diff lock,to engage low do i push lever forwards(from diff lock position)or do i have to bring lever back to normal driving position(back and right,no diff lock)before it will go forwards,i have given the lever some force in all positions but i dont want to end up breaking the stick!!!,cheers lads.

This happened to me on my 84 Auto Range rover and I did break the linkage. It had got all rusted up and was a real pain to repair (without taking gearbox out) Try and get WD40 on to it from below.

WD40 or similar on the linkage might help as suggested. Then just try to move the shifter patiently.

You do not need to shift the lever right, it will go to low range with the diff lock engaged.

OK.Thanks for the tips,it is starting to move now but only just and not enough to engage low box,i will get some wd40 on it tomorrow, thanks again,i was worried that the transfer box may be ****** but im happier now and i will persevere and get it fixed, cheers, chris.

If you remove the gearlever surround on the centre console, you can unscrew the auto selector (four screws) and get direct access to the transfer box linkages which are much easier to lubricate when you can see the bloody things. The auto selector is on a cable which is adjusted from the other end, so as long as you're careful with it you won't do any damage. Try not to kink the cable though.
