Iirc used to be common to find dumped, stolen landies that had had a square cut crudely out of the roof for lamping purposes.

Its not a hole.
When you open one from the outside there is a steel plate in the bottom. Under this is a domestic oven element. They use them for warming pizzas.
Its just another adaptation to make our beloved vehicle Americanized. Just like the monster truck look.

One round my way had a birdscarer fire from it. They could park it up and just let it fire . Wouldn't want to be a crook climbing in the hatch when it went off
