The doors didn’t fall off my Freelander when I went through this puddle. Watch the Defender at the end of video 5 going round the water. I went through ok.

The video’s were put up for those who wish to learn more about their car, or general mechanics. This video is clear and concise. I put them up here as I thought some of you would appreciate them.

Hey Hippo, Your just the person we need to educate them tractor boys. Still wetting myself at the terrified Pretender with it's "Go Anywhere" motto being shown the way by the Freelander. I freely admit that I'm not an offroader & have always conceded that the old Pretender was much better offroad but you've proved that wrong without a doubt.

A bit of careful driving can make a few hours off roading a great day out. Just goes to show you don't need a tank to do it either.

He certainly is. I see his compilation of posts so far have certainly made a modest impact on here. Not only has he tried to alienate others, he’s proved himself to be a contemporary literary master, who’s imparted his own uniquely stimulating style of conversation, on to others. Well done. You’ve certainly made a lot of friends on here.

Bob has a particular eloquence to his posts, which may not always be appreciated at first glance, by the majority. He doesn’t purposely set out to aggressively annoy people. It just sort of happens naturally. Don’t be put off by his dignified approach to creating over the top harsh comments either. He doesn’t mean to cause offence. Ironically he’s a good person underneath with a heart of gold. A solid stimulus of what it means to be British. He often feels outwitted by others, which unleashes his short-lived desire to continue to cause annoyance to others. He’ll simmer down as you get to know him. Bit like an old armchair you’ve had for years. Something you’d like to sit on.

His dignified approach to helping out when ever he can will no doubt become a joyful experience for us all to endeavour. A sort of cyber “best friend” you can rely upon when you really don’t need it.

To quote Ronan Keating “You say it best, when you say nothing at all”

Thanks for that. :) I’ve not posted much on this site whilst being a member for a while, but I plan to return the help I’ve gained while I’ve been here.

I’m not mechanic, but I’m planning to change my hippo’s belts. I’ve been looking for some time for a complete guide to every step of the belt change and these video’s are the best so far. The rave disk is good, but doesn’t answer all the questions. I’ll buy access for 24hours to the official land rover manual web site and see what that says. Also ordered back issues of Car Mechanic mag, which did a 2-part kv6 belt change on a rover car recently.

I plan to write up the step-by-step process of how to do the belt change hippo style. That may include B & Q sponsored wooden tools, I’ll post a link up on here when I’ve done it.

There is quite a lot on the net (if you can find it!) on KV6 belt changing. Someone described it well on another Freelander site but I cannot recall which site. There is good advice on the MG/Rover site as they have more knowhow on KV6's than this one. I have the Car Mechs if you cannot get them.
My suggestion would be do a lot of homework first, I assume you need to do a belt change taking age/mileage into account. IIRC a belt break is almost unknown on a KV6 but the MG/Rover site could confirm this.
The belt change with the engine in situ is going to be a bit harder than the engine out in the video!

My hippo is born in 2001. He seized up due to a timing fault in the software. It didn’t receive an update, which was critical. Milage was less than 500 miles. We didn’t have the car at the time. It blew in Japan. A new engine was fitted in 2003 in the UK, when it was put back on the road by a relative who imported it. Main dealer did it. It was cheaper to fit a new engine than taking it apart and messing with the bits.

Since then it’s done nearly 18k miles. So the belt is being changed on the age of the new engine, when it received a new belt in 2003. It’s due early next year. I’ve had a replacement auto fitted (on 12k miles) due to it leaking from every seal. I’ve chosen to keep him for another 5 years plus. So I’m prepared to have the belt done as a caution.

I plan to keep looking for info on the belt change. Complete a comprehensive list of instructions. If the belt change becomes too difficult, I’ll get a garage to do it. A main dealer told me they prefer to do the belt change with the engine removed. Same price as doing it whilst in the car. I’ll try it in the car to start with. I have spoken to several well known independent LR dealers. None of which want to do a belt change on him. I’m happy to have a go. If I break it, it’s not the end of the world. His value is low anyway. I know my limits so if I get stuck I’ll stop and have a rethink. I joined the rover/mg forum the other day. Thanks.
