rounded nuts and bolts

hi all has any body seen the new range of spanners for undoing ordinary nuts and bolts or rounded ones they have them at B&Q and are made by Stanley but there is also a set of sockets made by mac, the one I brought was a two ended spanner that you turn the head to make the small jaws come in but the mac ones are three eights drive sockets

I've seen them but haven't had a go yet. Ive got a full set of Irwin bolt removers and they've never let me down. They seem to go down well with a lot of people on this forum too.

hi the spanner was £24.99 or there about but being past 60 I got 10% of today and the sockets were £20 I should have brought those as well.

hi larry at the moment I can not do much as I have my right hand in bandages due to a operation but as soon as it is better I will give it ago I really can not wait but have to

I use snapon sockets that are designed to remove nuts and bolts that are 60% rounded and won't do any further damage.......

But I fink they are more eggspensives....

you try 6 point sockets instead of 12 point??????? 6 point seldom round off, unless they were round to begin with

unless they are flange head bolts some have sloping sides which throws socket off rounding edges the beauty of snap-on or irwin sockets is the helicoil edges pull socket on tighter

The irwins will undo anything. Even completely rounded heads, they just need hitting on with a hammer while slowly twisting.

The Irwin type extractors will not work on Caliper bolts as the bolts are 12 sided and the extractors are 6.

Caliper bolts are normally bi-hex, so you need a bi-hex socket ...

From the factory, the bolts are retained to the axle-flange using a blue "Loctite" type threadlocking compound.

As you've discovered, it's rather effective.

I'd recommend getting some heat into the heads of the bolts before trying further removal. A good blast from a normal blowlamp for a few minutes will help break the threadlock's seal...

normally bi hex.. I dont think mine had been removed for the 20 years they had been on the vehicle. There was nothing left.

This is not even the worse one. My point is, they will undo anything as long as the bolt is softer than the socket.

Ahh they're already off, bags of heat. But there was nothing on them what so ever. The hub arrays on my vehicle we gone. Axles fine but corners gone. Replaced everything but the swivel housing. I think previous owner left it parked on the beach...
