I have a 2000 plate 1.8 freelander and it has recently developed a rough idleand will often cut out when pulling up at junctions. I have had a compression test and #4 cylinder is low. Is it worth taking the head off or would you think its sumptoms of something major and a new engine would be the best way to go. Thanks

Certainly worth a look, it might be something simple like a burnt valve, have you done a compression test after putting a small amount of oil into the plug hole, the oil would seal a piston ring problem and raise compression, if the compression doesn't rise then the problem is with the head or HG

Its a head off job

how low is the compression, its probably the valves but no.4 is the first piston to get damaged so its not looking good

thanks for the reply guys, I'll do the compression test again with some oil, I could realy do without having to repl;ace the engine.

Well Ive done the compression test again I have 16 bar 12 bar and 10 bar in cylinders 1,2 and 3 but only 6 bar in cylinder 4. After adding a small amount of oil compression in #4 goes up to 9.5 bar, so I guess a new engine is gonna be needed Does any one know where is the best place to get a good 1.8 engine
thanks

those differences across all the cylinders does not bode well. definitely something major wrong with cylinder 4 though.

nowhere special for 1.8 engines, sadly a lot of freelander 1.8's are scrapped because of engine problems.

think it will just be a case of trawling ebay and so on. would look for a write off myself which has had a rear end impact.

good luck with your quest

don't think they'll be wanting the engine

Cheers guys, looks like I'm gonna be busy, think I'm gonna have a go at swapping the engine myself see if I can save a few quid. How could you not see a 6 foot pothole in the road? and how fast would you have to be going to flip it?:rolly:
