Hey All,

If anyone has had a rotary coupler replaced in the past can they let me know how much the repair job was please so i can let the wife know she is going shopping or not this month for her usual retail therapy :D. I need to book it in to a garage rather soon as it's MOT time next month and just need a rough idea of how much it's gonna cost. I Don't fancy doing it myself either, i don't have anywhere to store the bag safely and knowing my luck i will drop it or something.

I seen one for sale from the US for 79 quid but there is the labour also and the garage added value (the "let's chuck a couple more quid on" one).

Thanks.

Rotary Coupler - the bit that joins all the switches and controls that go around with the steering wheel to the rest of the electrics in the car that don't move around with the steering wheel.
Expensive me thinks?

what i did was buy press button switch from maplins for £1.50 and fit it in the steering column upper trim panel, then reconnect to horn to it, very easy, very cheap and will pass an MOT.

Is it possible to take a pic of the modification? just to get an idea how it looks when fitted.

Thanks.

Edit: Found out it may not be the rotary coupler but the wiring connection to the radio. There is a thread (should be on the first page at time of writing) about it.

my horn didn't work after the new radio was put in, i thought the switches on the steering wheel were at fault but it unlikely that both would fail, so i was going to have to replace the rotary coupler until the cost involved stopped me. I got a small black plastic press switch and drilled a hole in the top steering column cover and fitted the switch there. disconnected the horn wires from the steering wheel and soldered them onto the switch and the horn worked again. At the time i didn't realise it had anything to do with a new radio and still don't understand why it does.
I don't have a digital camera but what it looks like depends on what switch you buy and where you decide to fit it. If you are unsure then get an auto electrician to do it for you, would still be cheap enough.

Took the radio out today, the black/white and black/red (i think, need to look again for that one as was more concerned for the black/white wire) wires are the only ones that are not connected up via the iso connector, the black/white is the wire that connects to the radio controls on the steering wheel. Only thing is i don't have them but i'm guessing that this is somehow connected to the horns for some reason and it's been mentioned before in a previous post.

Using the original ISO is no good either, its not compatible with my new radio, and from radios i have had in the past, its got to be a manufacturer type one, i just haven't seen an interface like that before for anything else.

Jusy to add insult to injury i don't have the original radio as it packed in and kept eating my cd's, so i'm more or less buggered unless i find one on ebay. Guess i will have to wait for the switch from maplins to arrive and do a quick fix.

Only thing i can think of is buying a stereo with with the ability to use controls from the steering wheel (expensive no doubt) or getting a female connector to keep the original loom but would not necessarily make the horns work, trying to find one though...... only Land Rover can think of something like this

I think I started the thread where my horn was not working. A reply came back to say it was because I had replaced the stereo.
I traced the problem back to the rotary coupler as all other tests proved ok. I did not want to go back to the original stereo and also did not want to install a separate push button.
I stripped out the rotary coupler and checked all connections and put back together and wahay all working. When removing the rotary coupler take care not to rotate it. A small piece of masking tape will do.
