Whos got one and which one have you got...

We were having a good look round the LRO show at various roof top tents available. Trek Overland, Howling Moon and Front Runner were all at the show. I have always liked Front Runner as a brand and they are the cheapest roof top tent of the 3, has anyone got one or any of the other brands above?

We are planning our route around the NC500 and plan to wild camp next year, just need to pick a roof top tent!

It’s on a 90. That will be an issue. Be aware that roof tent plus a loaded roof rack raises your centre of gravity a lot and makes the vehicle unstable

We do have a tent and we love it, just liked the idea of a roof tent, especially as we will be moving on every day, thought it may be easier than putting a tent up and down.

Yes was only planning on sticking our holdall up there. Going to put a floor in the back where the rear seats are at the moment so i can make a drawer to hold most of our travel bits and cooking items.

I had a hannibal - not well made. If you want a folder go for the Australian gordigear - completely modular and every bit available as a spare (I have one in winter store, they have a european office) and for rigid i love the maggiolina on my trailer roof (and the italians are quite quick to respond if you contact them via their website)

Thank you, I hadnt looked at this company before, just had a look at their explorer, looks well priced too.
 
If you are after a soft top tent have a look at Tuff-Trek https://tuff-trek.com/
They were at the LRO, but mainly had hard tops with them. Their 1.4m TT02 might be worth considering.
I have gone for a Bundutop, but this is a hard top and would take up the entire roof on a D90.

Personally i like the look of the soft top tents, yes we had a look around the Tuff-Trek stall, dont remember seeing the TT02 but could be wrong. Are you happy with the build quality of yours? I think that is what i am after the most, a well made quality tent. Did you do the off road course at LRO? Blue Pig Photography have uploaded most of the photos now.
 
I've yet to receive my tent as the next import batch is due in October. But the Bundutop is made by Bundutec and the quality is outstanding.
The TT02 is made for Tuff Trek by a different company. I have looked one over and was impressed with the quality, but this might give more perspective - cut to the end to get their assessment of quality.
 
Dave [Si Click], thank you for this link, which in turn led onto other roof tent links. This has answered a pile of Q?'s I had re' roof tents. It'll be a Tuff-Trek unit for me.

Haven't decided on soft or hard top yet, but have looked at other reviews and they all read 5star for ease of fitment, assembly and, especially, quality. Telling Lucy that Dave recommends might not work...as Lucy's the name of the Land Rover[!][see avatar] I'll talk nicely to her tomorrow but not sure of her response... ;) Currently rebuilding whole front end at the moment so don't need to buy til the New Year [maybe they'll have a sale on?] and will be buying for a two week camping trip to Scotland with #1 son next summer. We're both getting quite excited for this great adventure including an Islay homage to Maurice Wilks and Ian [Land-Rover] Fraser. Have even started route plan already...it's going to be huge fun...
 
I would not bank on a sale. I have an email from Dara that gives warning of price rises in the very near future due to inflation and exchange rate changes. I doubt that leaving the EU would help either. One of the reasons I reserved one at the show was that this shipment from South Africa in October was the last one on which that they could guarantee to hold last years prices. Bear in mind also that unless you collect it yourself, the delivery costs are quite steep.
If you are interested in their Overland Series hard top tent - the one that is similar to the AluCab Gen3 - the same guys that reviewed the TT02 also bought an Overland.

I see Lucy has a roll cage. My son also bought a Bundutop at the show for his D90 and ordered a roll cage similar to yours from Whitbread Off Road. They will fabricate the cage with mountings to take the Bundutop and his kite surfing/snow boarding kit. You should be able to have yours modified to take the tent without needing the extra weight of a roof rack. In my case, as a Bundutop would completely fill a roof rack on my D2, I saw no point in buying one and have gone for 4 Flatdog Rax roof bars. About a quarter of the cost of a full roof rack, much lighter and with 4 feet vs 3 for the full rack, it should be stronger too.
