good point my primatech flaps like fook! has kept me awake in high winds! Although had no problem with water ingress, even in driving heavy rain. Yes it does get a lot of condensation under the mattress, so i just lift it up for an hour in the day and let the wind blow through it, surely you get condenstation in all tents though??

we were getting condensation above us off the canvas. Used to drip off onto our bags/heads in the morning :D We dont get any condensation now in the maggiolina.

Hi Booger - you've got the point exactly, it's the height of the awning that would cause me problems.
As to why not use a normal tent - it would just be usefull when the weathers bad to be able to access all the bits in the back, clothes cooking stuff, food, BEER. Somewhere to stick the bikes overnight etc. So the real answer is just convenience.
I love the Maggiolina concept but all that would provide me is sleeping quarters.
Following Griffdowgs post I am worried about the condensation. Never found it a problem in a normal tent even with 2 people & 4 (invariably) wet dogs. It formed on the flysheet & ran off. Quick shake when packing finished the job.

Hi Mark

The Oztents are pretty cool, you can access the back of the vehicle, they are easy to set up, and have the advantage that if you are camping for an extended period you can leave the tent and take the vehicle, of course that is only if you are in a place where they won't steel your tent, so that rules out Africa :D

I'm still getting the Chinese Tent, cause they meet the most of my requirements, and don't cost way too much.

If you still want a Roof Tent after looking at the Oztent, contact these guys Tourer Tent they are local so you can phone, and confirm wether the awning will reach the floor.

The thing I like about a separate awning is that if you just want to grab a nap, or if the ground is muddy, you just put up the top bit. Although camping with dogs you are never really going to stay clean ;)

Yet another option....

Brownchurch

Brownchurch

This was a question I had earlier - can the roof gutters handle the weight my lardy self and another up on the roof? This Brownchurch tent seems to sit on what looks like a pretty standard roof rack with eight pretty standard looking gutter mounts.

I am guessing that the answer is that yes, therefore no need for an external cage or anything fancy?

correct assumption.

You will be fine. LR defenders have a load rating of 75kg (maybe more on ROW defenders? I did hear 150kg from somewhere but this has been disputed) on the roof/gutters but this is in transit on variable terrain. Not parked up on a flat campsite.

I would still prefer to keep roof loadings to a minimum so only have the RTT up top.

i'm thinking of fitting two tents on my roof, does anyone have any experiences to share on this, realize i will probably have to extend roof rack but figure that will act as a sun shade.any thoughts anyone? LEE
A bit late in the day but during my two years in Botswana I had two Eezi Awn tents on my 110 and never experienced any problems. Dont have them opening out on the same side, it's just too close for comfort!!!! I had one opening over the front and the other over the side.

I've been looking on eBay, trying to find a s/h or reasonably priced roof tent... still can't work out why they're so expensive

Anyway, there's some brands I'm not familiar with, and I'm looking for advice I guess...

Any pointers would be great, 'cos I don't want to buy a crappy tent!

The best roof tents in the world are made in the southern hemisphere.

1) Eezi-Awn (South Africa)
2) Howling Wolf (South Africa)
3) Gordigear (Australia)

I have a Gordigear for sale if anyone is interested. Paid 1700 euro with shipping to the UK. Looking for £1200 - Model is the Gordigear Explorer Plus 65cm wide.

Thank you for your input but the member you are replying to hasn't been around since the middle of 2010.

I followed a link in from Google (top of the page rank and figured it was current) did not observe the dates correctly when entering the forum.

Could I create a new thread offering the tent for sale? Does the forum have a section dedicated to items for sale?

There is a board for selling, but you need to post at least 50 "constructive" messages in order to use it. This is to prevent people just turning up to sell their crap then p*ssing off again.
LandyZone is for LandyZone members, not peddlers.
