What about talking to the guys at:-

Land Rover Roof Tents

They seemed pretty clued up when I phoned 'em...

found their tents on an ebay site in Germany and after a bit of research have found them in China. German site cheaper and willing to give discount for multiple orders. Item number 330355935993. have contacted the manufacturer in China to ask for price, waiting for reply. LEE

I hope you didn't spend too much time researching it, seeing as all the above info is in post on page 1

But good on ja for actually contacting the factory, let us know the prices maybe we can do a bulk order and save on shipping ;)

What price were the German's willing to go down too ? and did it include the bottom room thing ?

Maybe this is a stupid question .... but how do you mount these roof tents? (I've never seen one up close). Does the roof rack need to have any sort of special mounts to share the weight of the tent and the people evenly along the roof gutters? Do you need to insert a solid floor on the roof rack?

for mine i'm going to build an external cage because the gutters are only rated at 75kg and i need to fit two tents. apart from that i beleive they fit just about any roof rack. LEE

a had to to put two new bars across the roof rack for the tent to mount on to as the rack is too wide

I've got the eezi- awn 1.6 series 3 i'm 6ft and there is still plenty of room

I bought it second hand with the shower curtain attachment for £450 delivered

You can get brand new parachute material ones for this price (ish) but I prefer the canvas quite alot, we travel with a duvet and pillows in moderate weather - its like waking up in your own bed!

It's nice and dark and doesnt hold the heat like most tents, I have not noticed any condensation as yet.

really easy to set up (all the bedding stays inside the tent all the time) packing away takes a little to get the hang of but no real issues.

other tents I looked into but didn't go for.

hannibal - Great!..... but costly, even 2nd hand

Maggiolina - I didn't like the design, good for traveling and aerodynamic just not my cup o tea - they do one called overland but way too much ££ autohome

myway - very good - not bad price 2nd hand

echo - cheap @ £550 non canvas

prime tech (the ebay one and the one on that landroverrooftent website)- cheap and look well built (but didn't inspect closer) non canvas

hope this helps

I'm portsmouth based and my tent is still on the roof, if you ever come this way, you are welcome to have a look

top tent i got one cant beat it superb materials, great build

Prices x-China

The basic roof tent $315
The one with ladder inside the awning $590

Most can be canvas or Polyester, prices vary a little depending on exact configuration. I have photo's, technical specs etc from manufacturer.
It's interesting that on the photo's many are logo'd from different suppliers, ARB, Open Sky etc.

Buying them's easy, minimum order 5 pieces. Problems checking the quality following production & organising shipping, customs etc. without having someone on site in China.

I spoke to some importers & they reckon it's necesary to do quality checks on site as once they're in the UK problems are difficult to sort, especially if you're not a regular purchaser.

If anyone wants the details pm me your email address & I'll send 'em thru. Can't figure how to post them on here.

Or maybe.........

Good Job, backup was also my worry, if you get a lemmon you can't exactly post it to China

For a small order of 5 tents you are probably looking at £50 to £100 shipping each, plus customs, plus it will be on the water for 6 weeks. If the ship sinks you get nada !

Probably best to try and negotiate a local deal. :D Only problem is that for a bulk buy will they be prepared to ship them to different locations ?

That's the list of the one's I looked at. My favorite is still the safari as it offers a combination of the materials & spec I'm after.

Anyone found any more (excluding the hyper expensive 'brand name' ones)?

Just out of interest what height do you guys need - is mine unusual being 7foot high?

So how much is a Hannibal in the U.K? I got quoted R8500 for mine in Cape Town, where the 'factory' is. It's actually rather basic. Then it turned out that the LR place I bought Rhubarb from used to own Hannibal so I paid R6500 - about $800 - £400.

They are awesome although there are some minor finishing problems - perhaps as a result of getting a cheapo one. We fit a duvet, two pillows and two sleeping bags for cold nights in once it's folded. The canvas and ripstop nylon are very good quality as are the zips.

They say they send a container every two weeks to Europe - it might be worth pricing their Scandi suppliers as I think a lot go there.

that sky one in the photos looks like it would fall to pieces in about a week. Beware Eazi-Awn and Howling Moon too - the cover is fully detachable. I met a Finnish couple in Sudan that had lost their cover in Tanzania - it just blew away one night.

Also on a Def90 a roof tent is always mounted over the bonnet. The ladder is generally shortened and attached to the bullbar.

Hannibal's awnings also don't have vertical struts which I like - they are mounted on swing arms meaning less to balance/trip over. I've seen all the major S.A. brands and Hannibal is standout although the generic Campmaster is a good value option if you can find one in Europe.

i got one of the german built prime-teck tents from ebay solidly built very strong and very comfortable due to the thickness of the matress
i got mine brand new for a bid £241.00 + postage at the time it was £70.00

you can buy it now for £500.00
if you pm me your email i will send you a couple of photos

I've got the same one, i must say its brilliant! Probably not as good as the aircamping etc ones, but for the money i think its great. Nice thick material, thick foam mattress, double skinned base and a good zip on cover when travelling. I used it in very high winds and driving rain in wales earlier this year and it never leaked a drop

OK, I have to ask....these tents look really good, and I love the idea.....but what is the reasoning/fascination with having a tent on the roof of your truck? Why not buy a $100 dome tent and throw it out on the ground next to your truck rather than sleep on the roof?

(If there are lions or bears where you live, I get it....but what about the rest of the world?)

I bought one as i camp in the paddocks at race circuits, pegs don't go into tarmac very easily ;). Also it take about a minute to set up, unzip the cover then open it and its all set up.
