Rib launch with Puma

Hi new to Landyzone - I wonder I feel you can help, recently bought a 5m Rib, the slipways where I live on Skye are quite steep, I am driving a 2011 Puma - would you advise Low ratio for launch and retrieve? Thanks

I've been on a few dodgy slipways, personally I'd always use low range, more control and more torque to the wheels, also less chance of wheel spin

youve more chance of wheel spin in low box so generally its as high a gear as practicable ,but on but on a steep ramp, low box for control rather than clutch and brakes for reversing would be my choice

Sure more torque gives you the opportunity to break traction, but that's what the clutch is for. Slow and steady, easy does it.

I think the puma engine defenders have traction control so wheel spin shouldn’t be an issue if fitted.

Does it work <5mph on a proper 4x4? Not used to such tech

more torque does increase the chance for breaking traction ,hence using 2nd gear to set off in ice were 1st has a wheel spinning

'86 RRC auto. I use low box with difflock engaged for the steep slip I launch from in Cornwall.
Look at the slip first & assess for how slippery it is.
Even on a clean slip if it's wet you might find yourself with all 4 wheels locked sliding backwards.
Bit of a bum clencher the first time but with mine when the boat hits the water - so far - it all stops.
If the slip is really bad - slime, weed etc - consider using a rope to lower the trailer to launch & recover keeping the vehicle on good ground.

If you haven't got enough room to drive straight & get trailer on rope back on level ground use a strop & a block.
On the same slip the Harbourmaster wont let 2 wd onto the slip after a couple got stuck some years ago with slipping clutches.
Trailer lowered on rope, boat recovered (be careful as the front of the trailer may tip up until the boat is well onto it, not a problem if you're expecting it & shouldn't happen if you float off/float on) then the rope is taken through a block inline with the slip & attached to the towbar. Car is at 90deg to the slip on the flat part of the harbour. Drives forward slowly & up comes the trailer under control of Harbourmaster & any volunteers onto level ground.
