Hi all, can someone please help?
I have a 1998 P38 DSE.I have purchased a new RF Receiver from land Rover dealers, part number YWY500170. managed to get the rear compartment cover off with a small struggle and there was the old unit. Great, easy fix, unscrew the grub screw hold the old unit in, disconnect the RF wire and the ECBM wire, take out old unit connect up and fit in new unit then.................NOTHING!!!

When the new unit was installed I pushed the lock / unlock button on the key fob and nothing happened. Tried the ingnition but it came up as "engine immobilised". Didnt want to take a chance on pushing the key fob button to many times so re-installed the old reciever unit straight away and all works fine again!!!

After reading up on here i gathered that it was a straight forward swap. Should I have had the engine running? Do I have to some how match the key fob to the new RF unit?? Will I have to pay a dealer to do it???

I am only changing the unit due to the usual battery drain overnight problems. I understood it to be a straight forward fix!! My knowledge of vehicles could be written on a matchbox but want to try and fix it myself as I am loath to pay out for a minimum 1 hours labour for what should be a 10 - 15 minute job!!

Thanks in advance for any advise given.

Should just be plug and play, could be you are unlucky and it's a duff unit. The RF unit just receives the signal from the FOB and sends it to the BECM where the code is checked. Try it again and doudle check the connections.

It's a straight swop, you should not even have to resync the key. Make sure the unit is not a 315MHz unit, that will not work. You need to make sure it says 433MHz (to match your key). If you have a high battery discharge, check if the becm is going to sleep, if an auto, see if the red LED next to the P on the gear shift lever goes out after 2mins (switch off ignition and int. lights first), if it still glows dimly after 2mins, becm is not going to sleep. The problems with the rf receiver, are only in certain locations eg airports, garages and possibly other powerful devices at same frequency. If your becm does not go to sleep in the middle of no where its not the rf receiver.

Add wireless doorbells, Wifi, wireless electricity monitors and a number of other such devices to that list.
If the RF receiver develops a fault as opposed to picking up stray signals, it can keep the BECM awake in the middle of the bloody Sahara desert:eek:

So take your car to the Sahara desert. Lock it and leave for 24 hours. Take a deck of cards and play solataire to keep you occupied. If after this time the battery is flat, you may have a fault in the RF reciever. Borrow a camel and take battery to nearest oasis for recharge. :D:D:D :p:p:p

Hi all, thanks for the replies. the vehicle is a manual so cant check any gear box lights. Battery has drained over night a couple of times but then other times, if left for a week say, in the same place it is fine.

How would i check to see that it is a 433Mhz version and not a 315Mhz???

I will try again this afternoon making doubly sure that all the wiring etc is firmly connected but it seems pretty idiot proof!!!!!!:D:D:D

I put the old one back in and it worked fine, maybe this one is a dud. It came in a LR parts box but was loose inside, arent parts usuallly supplie inside a plastic bag then inside a LR parts box??

Is there anyway in telling if this is a brand new / unused part or if I have been stitched up?

Thanks once again for all the replies.

I've not fitted one of these for about 10years, but there should be a label on the unit (not the box) with a part number on the side and also I would have thought the frequency. Type into google the part #, it should confirm which market it is for. If its a 315Mhz unit, that is only for NAS and Japan. 433 MHz is UK, Europe & ROW.

HHmmm.....well, just re checked the unit, the only markings are " PA 6 GF 30"!! When I googled that it would appear to identify the plastic that the caseing in made out of!!

There is a small green sticker on the front of the unit where the wires clip in and a white rectangular sticker on the top with HUF on it!1

Apart from that nothing!!

Have also re-examined the LR parts box that it came in and again, no mention of Mhz type etc just the part number.

Back to whence it came from tomorrow I think.

Well, I have just tried it again, this time with the engine running (thought it might make a difference!!) but it still wont work so its back to the parts department tomorrow.

Should this part be marked up in some way to show as to whether it iss the correct Mhz as previously stated??

Cheers once again for the replies chaps.

I think you are safe in thinking its a faulty unit. The ywy500170 is the right part number for a 433mhz uprated unit,I've fitted loads of them and never had a problem.Be interesting to see what the dealer says about warranty - they can be funny about electrical stuff.

the newer type of rf reciever doesnt have any number to identify it on it, ebay have had loads of people trying to fob people off with the old units. The best beat and i know it will be more expensive is to deal direct with a land rover main dealer parts department. they will supply you with the correct rf receiver, I got mine 2 years ago and it was around £140.

I got the part through our MT dept where I work. We run a few LR`s and so have an account with the local main dealer so Im sure it was supplied as a genuine part through them, just that this particular one is faulty.

The fact that it was in a LR parts box but only sealed at one end and also NOT in a plastic bag as well inside the box makes me suspicious that this may be a return that has been put back out again!!

Will see what they have to say tomorrow.

Many thanks for all the in-put.

Its a couple of months since I used one,but I need to order one tomorrow with a couple of front door latches.I cant remember them being in a plastic bag inside the box - I'll soon know tomorrow.

Mine replaced nearly 2 weeks ago by garage, came in sealed box, sealed plastic bag inner......touch wood, crossed fingers, legs, toes, nuts ......seems purfik!! :):)

Had one delivered today,no plastic bag,box only sealed at one end.I'll fit and test it tomorrow if I get a chance.;)

Well, now its get strange. the part supplier, Land Rover, claim that these have to be programmed when fitted in before they will work and ARE NOT just plug in and go!!!!

Any advise please, I smell a rat here, maybe a dealer just wanting to make a few`quid quick!!

Total crap - they just plug in.Ask to watch the Testbook proceedure to do it - be interesting cos there isnt one.

Good grief, what next??? What a load of total bull, my now ex-Rangie needed the same RF receiver change and it took me, a "mere woman" all of five minutes to accomplish successfully without any "reprogramming". And I recall a generation of P38 owners who changed their RF receivers very easily without any "reprogramming" whatsoever. I'd avoid that dealer - its either crooked or very stupid (or probably both)
