reverse lights

evening all i have a problem with the reverse lights on my 1996 disco v8 manual. when i put it in reverse the reverse lights come on then go straight off again but if i hold the gear lever in the rverse position they stay on???. now someone at my local land rover specialist told me to adjust it but thats all he said. so has any off you guys had or got the same problem and what is the fix i.e what do i need to adjust or replace and where do i find it?

The reverse lamp switch on the gearbox.........see RAVE> "A reverse lamp switch is inserted into the extension housing. Selection of reverse gear will close the switch allowing current from fuse 25 to flow through the switch to illuminate the reverse lamps".

Don't think they can be adjusted on these boxes can they? I know they can't on the R380, a new switch isn't much

Hi Schoey, the best thing is to replace the switch, they are only about £3, but if you want to try adjusting the existing one the only thing you can do is to remove the washer which allows the switch to go in a bit further.

Tbh you'd be better off just getting a new switch..............

Defo get a new switch mate, as biglad said they're only about 3 quid and no point adjusting it only to go wrong again in a few weeks, have a look through busters "how to" guides, there's one in there, I know it's for a defender but it shows you where the switch is what it looks like etc.

If the new switch don't cure it you may find that the plate inside the gearbox that the switch pushes against has worn. This was the case for me, however not wanting to take the gearbox appart for something as simple as a reverse switch, I put the new switch in a lathe and turned it down by about 1-2mm so I could screw it in further and the problem was solved.
