My reverse lights have not been working for a couple of months also the rear wiper has stopped coming on when I put it in Reverse.

Had a new switch fitted today but that hasn't solved the problem.

The mechanic checked the fuses and bulbs and as far as he was concerned they seemed fine.

Does anyone have any ideas what I try next?

Thanks for any replies.

Auto or manual gearbox?

Do the reverse and brake lights work with the engine oft but electrics on?

Its a Manual.

And it gets worse after looking this morning.

The reverse lights don't work Engine on or off.

And the lights directly below the reverse lights dont work either.

the Lights in the rear bumper are acting as side lights and Brake lights.

My head is battered!

hi

are ur rear fogs , indicators working , is the front lights working ok,

if the fronts are working fine I would then assume the fuses, switches etc are ok and its a wiring fault going to the rear of the hippo

the wiring loom on mine a 2002 td4 , runs down the drivers side under the door sill,

what year is ur hippo

sounds like a possible break in the wiring loom or have u got power coming out of the fuse box, then power out of the switches etc

are the earths ok on the rear clusters etc

just an idea

Thanks gstuart, she is a 200 td4 same as yours. Headlights work ok.

where is the rear cluster so I can check?

Could it be my Reverse relay(R217)?

hi mate

just trying to think of causes that may help u abit

the rear cluster sorry should have said the rear lights,

suppose thinking about it if the front headlights work in theory that should eliminate the lighting and indicator stalk as the fronts are working

not sure about the relay , haven't had too much dealing with it

does anything work on the back , if nothing works i would only assume a break in the loom or possibly where the rear loom plugs into the fronts has got a bad connection , they are located by the drivers side panels next to the pedals, in the footwell , right hand side , the wiring then goes under the door sill

By everything being knocked out at the back it possibly a wiring fault, does the rear
window work by the way

the main wiring loom runs down the entire drivers side of the car, don't know if yours is a 3 or 5 door

Ref to the plugs that go to the rear in the drivers foot well maybe the use of a multimeter may be a good idea as u can the. switch ur lights on and see if you've got power to that relevent pin in the plug, if so can then move on to check the other side of the plug when u push it together to make sure the contacts are good

there are other more experiance guys here which should be along and maybe identify it better than I can

if the lower lights in the bumper are acting funny then I think you may find it is down the an earth problem the lights below the reverse light are fog lights also see if there is any water in you bumper lights as these are prone to getting water in are the contacts in good condition they may need a little sandpaper around them hope this helps

woah ! (that's english for stop a horse)

the lights in the bumper are the indicators and the tail/stop light, so this bit is correct and working correctly. the cluster higher up in the rear body work is fog light and reverse light.
