Hi since buying my L plate 200tdi it has had no reverse lights, decided to investigate today found the one spade had snapped off the switch.
Simple I thought, so bought new switch swapped them over now I get confused!!!!

If the switch is screwed in fully I can not get reverse, so I slackened it off until I can reverse but the lights just stay on, any ideas on how I can get them working correctly?????

I had a similar problem when fitting a new switch, but with mine the switch either baulked the reverse selection, or the lights wouldn't switch on !!

It's a bit of trial & error, adjust it out a bit more and they should only go on when you select reverse gear and go off again as son as you come out of reverse.

Cheers
Dave

Thanks for the guide, I been struggling from underneath vehicle, was not aware there was a hatch, will have to check that out.
Don't forget, this was done on a defender.. it was just an idea as to how to fit it ;) Ah 'think' disco's are a little bit harder to get in from the top (not sure as ah've never had one);) :D

yeah, i went to do me swivel on the offside....... someone has welded the lock stop bolt so that snapped, then when i got the end off the axle i found the half shaft uj id fooked (might be what caused the bottom bearing to go on the swivel as there is a load of bits of roler in there) gotta wait til monday to get a new UJ from work, in the mean time i am gonna clean and paint the old axle parts that are going back on (steering arm, hub, freewheel etc) and fit me new swivel housing i am eventualy gonna fit a disco axle but i have to wait til the bloke has time to make the plates to convert them to leafs, i am gonna do a how to thread when i do it

sorry for the hi-jack

put the g/box into reverse, with the ignition on, screw the switch in until the light just comes on, now screw it in half a turn more and lock up the nut. this should be correct.

  Found the problem today, spent ages messing with the switch, finally unwound it totally to discover my reverse lights remain on. Looks like I over tightened the switch and mashed it time to buy another one

Sorry fot the stupid question, but I thought the reverse light wire ran directly from the gearbox to the bulb. What is this 'switch' of which you speak and where is it exactly?
