Series 3 Reverse gear jumping out

Hi,
When i put my series 3 into reverse it works for a little and then jumps out of gear, then i have to put it back in gear and it happens again.
Does anyone know the reason for this and how to fix it?

Broken spring on the reverse stop mechanism? Have a look in the book - it shows how the selectors work, they're easy enough to access.

The reverse selector spring is stronger then the other two selector springs maybe some one put the wrong spring in.
On earlier ser 3 boxes there is a reverse stop screw screwed into the rear of the transfer case if you have this make sure it is set up correctly.
Also the selector fork where it bolts onto the selector shaft has some amount of movement it should be in the mid position and the bolt well tightened from memory.
Also check the pivot bolt that holds the gearstick in the correct place in the alloy housing for the ball on the gearstick.

it could also be a worn reverse idler

My mate has recently done a rebuild on the gearbox and would have replaced any worn parts. The reverse was fine before the rebuild if that makes any difference?

Checked the springs they were wrong. Swapped them around but the problem still persists

Does you mate know LR gearboxes inside out, upside down and backwards like James Martin does?

Inspected the box tonight. Looks like I may have found the culprit. The reverse selector fork is worn

that wouldnt do it unless it was set wrong , forks need setting

I will set the forks again when i get the new reverse selector forks then and see if that sorts it.

surely if you set the new fork and it works you still won't know if it was the setting or wear of the old one?

if the gear was fine before the rebuild wouldn't that mean it was more likely the problem was the setting?

The springs are right, it's got a new reverse idler in, the castleated nut is tightened properly. If that doesn't resolve it il be clutching at straws and have to have another rethink

Worn? Nah, mine was worn, never once jumped out of reverse though.

The old one's the one on the left if you couldn't tell...

So i have fitted the new selector fork and realligned the rods and it still jumps out of gear

The replacement reverse selector fork that I fitted to my box needed some tickling with a grinder as it fouled on the 1st/2nd selector fork when sliding the fork backwards and would only throw the gear into partial engagement. I presume you would have noticed this if this was an issue with yours.

In the end i endend up taking it all out again and did another rebuild on it. Ensuring that everything was at the right spec.
Eh presto it worked!

Annoying isn't it. I rebuilt mine because it was jumping out of reverse. Fixed the reverse but started jumped out of second. So had to have another go.

Well done for sorting it in the end though.
