I've got a 1998 L-Series diesel and the rev counter keeps going off intermittently. Usually, when you 1st drive the car, it will work fine for the 1st 5 mins or so, but the needle will jump if you drive over a bump. After about 5 mins, it decides it's had enough - it looks as if there's a loose connection, because the needle will dance about as if it's trying to work, then you hit a bump and it gives up altogether. After this time, if you thump the dash or rock the instrument binnacle backwards, you can make it work again, but you have to sit holding the instrument binnacle.
I took the instrument binnacle cover off today, but all the wires/plugs going into the intrument cluster seemed fine and no amount of waggling them affected the rev counter. However, if I thumped the actual dashboard behind the instrument binnacle, the needle would jump and/or stop working, so is there a sender unit or something in this area that can be replaced?
