Hi,

Considering purchasing a 2005 l322 4.4 petrol vogue it has a few things to fix most of which I think I have sussed out, however the one problem I am struggling with is that the rev counter always reads low 0 rpm on idle, about 800 rpm at 50kmh. if you rev the engine in park the dial does climb but lags significantly behind the revs.

Anyone any ideas what this could be?

Could just be a sticky needle motor....

If you have access to a OBDII diagnostics (a generic one will do) like EasyOBD or similar, you can read the RPM figure that the Engine ECU is giving out to the dash....see if that is reading the right figure....this will confirm if it is just a dash/binnacle/needle issue or if the Engine ECU isn't reading the RPM signal from the CPS sensor correctly (doubtful if the engine runs sweet otherwise)

ELM327 cables can be had dirt cheap from Amazon or similar with the EasyOBD software (which is free anyway) that will do the trick and also allow you read engine fault codes......to diagnose the vehicle systems further, you'll need a more LR dedicated unit.

Unlock the hidden dash menus and do a 'Test 2'.....this is the instrument binnacle self test and will flash all the lamps and drive all the gauges and dials to prove they are working....

Gooooogle BMW Dash Hidden Menu and you should find the unlock instructions....takes mere moments to do.

Also one of the hidden tests will tell you the RPM in a digital figure to check against the gauge/dial....
