yeah its a petrol :D
i think it Depends on the gauge - some take a reading from one of the ignition leads, some take a reading from the alternator. aye It is possible but like yer said how you wire it depends on the gauge
some have the negative wire from the dizzy to the ground. so yes They can also be wired to the w terminal of the alternator.
and if its a smiths etc thers a single turn of white wire then it goes between coil and distributer inductive pick up ...there is a screw or somethin to adjust the reading for 4 6 8 cyl live and earth just for the electronics,

dunt think yer can go wrong with them really, they only work on the amount of pulses they count per engine revolution, so a 4 cyl will count twice the revs on an 8cly engine, so make sure yer get the right one or set the multi up fer correct readings

Just about any 4 cyl petrol rev counter will work, theres normally 3 wires on the electronic ones, one is live with the ignition, another chassis ground and the last goes to the wire on the coil that goes to the dizzy points, thats about it.
Smiths guages have red, black and yellow, the functions of which are the same order as above.
Diesel tacho's run off the alty w connection or phase tap, making a phase tap is easy enough if the alty has not got one, but your better with an ignition driven tacho on that, belt ratio's, number of poles in the alty are a ballache with belt driven ones.
