On my latest arrival (1999 4.6) I have a problem where the engine lacks power below 2000 rpm and seems to stutter when under load. The plugs looks like she is running very lean so I checked the MAF and it was filthy - there was even the wings of a dead insect on the wires. I cleaned the whole thing with carb cleaner. Will the ECU start recalculating values or do I need to have the adaptive values reset? If the latter, can this be done with any diagnostic equipment or do I need to find someone with a testbook or faultmate?

It will re-learn after a while but it is always favourable to get them re-set after any work on the MAF or changing O2 sensors etc. I dont know if some of the top end diagnostics machines can do a reset other than the T4 Testbook Autologic or Faultmate. I would seek out and specialist independant that could also give you read out of any stored codes that might help you diagnose.

Having learnt about this the hard way many years ago before getting the ecu adptives reset check the reset of the engine is in good state
A customer brought a car to me with no running faults and asked for the adptives to be reset which I did but was done when the engine was hot this masked the poor starting when cold which the customer took as the norm
Traced the fault to poor cheap plug leads and a lack of good servicing once I had retified the faults and got it running ok reset the adptives when it was stone cold and this allowed the ecu to learn it's adoptions and improve it back to a near new car level
